For anyone who says horse chestnuts dont work to keep away spiders they are wrong! We have a huge spider problem in my house, both small ones and the large wolf spiders and last autumn I placed horse chestnuts in the corners of my room and didnt have a single spider all autumn or winter! I purchased this product for use while horse chestnuts are not available and I tried it for the first time this week after seeing a couple of little spiders in here and I am more than impressed that the ones that were here ran away and none have come in since. I would recommend this product to anybody with a spider problem! We will definitely be using it all over our house!

I have suffered a persistent plague of big black and brown spiders in my garage for years. I don't mind the small ones. It's the big ones that bother me - the ones that run up the wall like a severed hand on the move, and stand alert and facing you when you enter the garage, as if they've just spotted dinner. I thought I would try this stuff to encourage them to move elsewhere. I know it doesn't kill them, but just repels them, which I am happy with.

The bottle has a photo of a big spider on it. Not a good start for me. You'd think the last thing you'd put on a product aimed at people who don't like to see spiders, is a glossy photo of a terrifying thing the likes of which was last seen scuttling around in "Aliens". I put sticky tape over that and all was reasonably well, though I still knew it was there. A cartoon spider would have been better.

But I digress... I sprayed it as directed, around the door and window, and all around where spiders lurk, and then let it do its work. A week later, the only thing coughing, spluttering and leaving the garage is me. The spiders are still nicely at home there. All I have for my efforts is a garage that smells of clove and chestnut oil. The spiders are still up the walls and in every web-filled corner, same as last week. None seem to have packed their webs and abandoned the place. Certainly the big ones are still in residence.

The acid test, so to speak, was the couple of hand-sized buggers perched behind the garage door frame. I sprayed around there first, but they just dashed off into their web for a while, and then continued, business as usual, doing a 16-legged waltz up the wall about an hour later. I may as well have sprayed them with tap-water for all the notice they took of it. I was not satisfied with this result.

I have been using this particular spider deterrent for about 10 years and have always found it to do the job in discouraging spiders: they don't like the smell.

As per the instructions, I have reapplied the spray every three weeks, often a lot sooner. I sprayed it near all conceivable entrances to a single room. In that time I have noticed that there are less spiders around, but there have still been some. As a test, I caught a spider. I sprayed this formula on the floor, in a different room, in a very large circle. I released said spider in the centre of it. He immediately walked toward the line of spray. As he got to his legs touching it, he stopped, looked puzzled, and without checking to see if there was another route not involving spray, walked straight over it. Wondering if this reaction was due to the wet floor, I redid the experiment, but this time waited for the floor to dry before releasing a spider (a different one). This time, same results. He stopped as soon as he got to the line of spray, and then just walked straight over it.

Now, I realise these experiments weren't perfect. For one, the spiders used would have been under more stress than your average spider walking around your home that comes across a line of spray. Could this have forced him to cross the line? Perhaps. But I was still hoping the spray would have stopped it completely, and forced it to find another route.

A star rating was extremely hard to decide upon for this product, due my mixed results. I have settled upon three stars because I have noticed less spiders in the one room. The spray doesn't necessarily claim to stop spiders from crossing, just act as a natural deterrent. But in my eyes if it only makes them hesitate for a couple of seconds, it deserves to lose at least one, and on this occasion, two stars.

In conclusion, I do believe that this will reduce the amount of spiders in a given area.

Still have spiders. Made no difference at all. In fact I found a spider sat next to the bottle within hours of spraying the area.

We used this product all last Autumn and Winter and we had hardly any spiders at all which is most unusual. We spray the outside edges of all our windows. The thing to remember though is you MUST keep spraying every time there is heavy rainfall. The rain washes the spray away. This is not a spray to kill spiders on the spot. It's meant to keep spiders away in the first place.

Unfortunately, this spray has not worked for me. It smells very nice (a little like pot-pourri at Christmas) but I'm still surrounded by spiders.

Living in a fairly old building with a LOT of spiders. The small ones seem to like it - must admit it doesn't smell bad. The big ones run away from the noise of the spray and then sit in the corner watching you forlornly clutch the bottle and wondering what to do next. The last one I encountered I think was still sniggering when I gave up and left the room. Final score : Spider 3 - arachnophobe 0.
