Book Description

19 July 2012

After the best part of forty years spent either living under his parents’ roof, in the tropical rainforests of three continents, a vast array of student digs or most recently a one-bedroom flat, The One Show’s Mike Dilger has at last bought a house – and with it, a (potentially) glorious garden…

‘Potential’ was definitely the word that sprang to mind the very first time Mike and his partner Christina viewed their new ‘house-and-garden-to-be’ in a small rural village some eight miles south of Bristol.

And so begins their year-long journey to create their very own wildlife sanctuary. From otters to badgers, chickens to hedgehogs, an orchard, a pond and compost bins, to the best birdlife imaginable, what began as a straightforward mission soon became the adventure of a lifetime.

Illustrated throughout with beautiful black-and-white line drawings by Christina Holvey, Mike Dilger’s partner-in-crime, this light-hearted nature tale with a twist will appeal to wildlife enthusiasts and keen gardeners alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Garden And Other Animals 1 Oct 2012
By A. V. Calvert VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This book is the best one I have read this year.Mike Dilger is so eloquent in his descriptions of the wildlife.I must say I love to see him on TV and he has a unique voice.I can hear him in my ear all through the book.It is a heartwarming book full of love for the environment and the welfare of the wildlife.A lot of the things he describes has happened to me too.The book runs along sometimes at an exciting speed and other times slow and gentle but altogether a lovely book.He describes the colours and the lives of all the creatures mixed in with his busy schedule of work.
I highly recommend this book one of the very best if you love wildlife.
I received this book free for review and how glad I am that I picked it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amusing, informative and well worth reading! 5 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Mike Dilger cordially invites us, the readers, into his garden and guides us through the story of a year in its life. The tale is written in a jovial tone that makes it of interest to more than just nature enthusiasts, though any seasoned gardeners out there will find lots of inspiration here as well. Personally, I particularly enjoyed the frank and honest treatment he gives to tales of his relationship with his partner Christina - they give the book a lovely human-interest side story which weaves wonderfully with the main garden narrative. Christina's beautiful illustrations provide the finishing touches to a well-rounded read, perfectly suited to calm summer afternoons in a garden of your own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Book Packed with Nature Info 26 April 2013
By elsie purdon TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This book is a total treat if you love back garden nature as I do. I wanted to read the book though I have never see Mike Dilger the author before on TV, but thought it sounded like a good read and it is.
I love the way he lets his enthusiasm shine through, for every discovery of plant, every garden bird spotted or mammal seen coming inside his huge back garden.
He is sharing a newly bought house and this huge garden with Christina his partner who incidentally has made lovely illustrations to go with the book.
The book records their first year in Chew Stoke a village 8 miles outside Bristol.
Every change he made is described in such a friendly fashion I really warmed to Mike. He writes about the whys and wherefores of what he changes and how he did it.
This is a packed bumper book that probably needs more than one reading to absorb all the information Mike is sharing.
A great read, recommended.
