Review

I received a book recently by Thomas B. Clarke called a Garden of Love. It's a devotional that introduces and describes different types of flowers that are found in the author's church garden, Gethsemane Prayer Garden, where he is caretaker. As each flower is described, Clarke takes a similar concept from Scripture and compares God's creation with the truths found in His Word. He tells inspirational stories, describes Gods attributes, and challenges Christians to live a life pleasing to God. The book uses similes not unlike Scripture to describe the love of the Father to his Son, the love of the Father, Son and Spirit to people, the love of Christians to the Lord and one another. It is the intent of the author to encourage a softer heart toward God and His love for us.

Much like a mother sees God in the love she feels for her child, and how a doctor can seen the awesomeness of God in the complexity of the human body, this author has seen more of God and His love through the flowers he has lovingly tended over the years. I plan to make this a gift book to a dear friend that enjoys her garden in the same way that this author must enjoy his. --Blog "Mom of Many", May 15, 2011

I love this book! The descriptions of each flower as they relate to God's love for us has left such lasting imprints in my mind of ways that God cares for me. Visual pictures like this book creates have great lasting impact. --Amazon.com (USA), December 27, 2009

In "A Garden of Love", Tom Clarke shares the love of the Lord through beautiful prose and photos of flowers that grow in the Gethsemane Prayer Garden at Faith Chapel. Each vibrant, colorful flower contains a brief description, including what it expresses to the author, followed by a devotion on that aspect. Love truly blooms in this book with the lessons each flower has to offer, along with appropriate scripture verses, inspiring a feeling of Christ's love within as you read. --Amazon.com (USA), July 7, 2011

Thomas Clarke is the caretaker for the Gethsemane Prayer Garden at Faith Chapel in Syracuse, New York where he pours his heart and soul into caring for the gardens. His love of flowers, and spiritual insight is captured in the beautiful book, A Garden of Love penned by Thomas Clarke. Imagery includes real life photographs of flowers complimented by spiritual passages, which are thought provoking and provide insight into the concept that peace can be acquired with spirituality.

An excerpt include: "If I could, I think I would plant acres of cosmos. Their flowers are so tall and wispy with an abundance of white, pink, and rose color that splash the color palette. As the flowers dance in the wind, I know that it is the strong roots that allow it to withstand heavy winds and storms. In this reading, I invite you to see how else the cosmos withstand the storms." --Blog "Laura's List", April 23, 2010

5.0 out of 5 stars The depth and the breadth of God's love, 27 Dec 2009

This review is from: A Garden of Love (Paperback)
The distinctive characteristics of each flower add a richness to the Scriptural applications. I am awed anew by the breadth and depth of God's love. Love those pictures, too! This book would make a lovely gift for a gardener. The larger sized font would be appreciated by many who are more elderly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Read, 30 Jan 2012

This review is from: A Garden of Love (Paperback)
A Garden of Love is a stroll in springtime through the Gethsemane Prayer Garden at Faith Chapel in Syracuse, New York. Author Thomas B. Clarke is the caretaker of this garden. Pastor Lee Simmons and church member Alice Soule envisioned it. Ever since then, they have watched the miracle that a ministry such as this grows.

Mr. Clarks writes intuitive and encouraging gems of biblical truth as he walks you through this garden with pictures and prose. I find the artistry of this book both restful and nourishing to my spirit. The simple truths of God's love are ever needful along any human garden path, and this book provides such gems to us as each chapter unfolds more beauty encased within different flowers. I also found the practical knowledge of the seasons, growth patterns, and climate needs for each flower helpful in increasing my understanding of flowers in general.

With such chapters as "Chrysanthemum", "Delphinium", "Honeysuckle Vine", and "Showy Primrose" the reader is allowed precious glimpses of eternal value. All Creation worships, and author Thomas B. Clarke testifies anew of this glorious reality in A Garden of Love. I recommend this lovely book for young and old alike. I think it a good volume for springtime family devotions. Children will enjoy the pictures, and everyone from about fifth grade on up can appreciate the thoughtful worship and insight in this volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Garden of Love, 10 Jan 2012

This review is from: A Garden of Love (Paperback)

A GARDEN OF LOVE is a book dedicated to the ministry of Faith Chapel, where they have a Gethsemane Prayer Garden. In this one acre of land with (in 2009) nine flower beds including fifty different perennial flower varieties and up to forty different shrub and tree species and subspecies.

Tom Clarke has been the primary garden caretaker for a number of years with other volunteers from his church (and area) and the garden is open to the public. It is located outside Syracruse, New York, and a map with directions is included in the book.

A GARDEN OF LOVE begins with the author's thoughts about the particular plant he's writing about, along with a beautifully done photographs. It gives a short description about the plant, when it blooms, and its fragrance.

It is followed by a couple verses, a short prayer and thoughts about the verses and how the flowers relate to it, then a short application for us to remember as we go about our day. Each devotional is short, only one page--two pages if you count the photograph leading up to it, and doesn't take long to read.

If you or someone you know is an avid gardener, then you'll want to get a copy of A GARDEN OF LOVE for yourself or your loved one or friend. This is a perfect book for perusing, can be used for a devotional, and gives information about the flowers. I recommend this book for gardeners or elderly.
