Product Description

Synopsis

Between the boundaries of fine and popular art and high and low culture, reside id driven impulses and alter egos such as toys, cartoon characters, and iconic images. From the whimsical to adorable, erotic to innocent, they lure us into their lush worlds of fairy tales, dreams and inspiration. "The Garden of Eye Candy" introduces an international roster of artists - the fore runners of these Surrealist inspired creations. It includes contributions from Cabizbaja, Candybird, Dolly Didit, Jaime Zollars, Kennys Work, Kukulaland, Lisa Petrucci, Amy Sol, Melanie Florian, Danielle Lamberti, Kokomoo, Majeakann, Mark Bodnar, Rmyers Art, Saul Zanolari, Luke Chueh and more.

Beautiful 14 May 2009
Definitely a must have for any fans of Lowbrow art or even just dolls and character design. Anyone who loves contemporary youthful, pretty illustration should have this book. It is one of my favourites that I own.

Childhood Dreamers 7 Oct 2011

Journeys back to childhood but sheds the kitsch of innocence. Long gone are the wistful days of pooh sticks, teddy bears and dolls. In these scenes the pictures scratch at the mirror of the looking glass world. Instead the depictions evoke the malevolence wrapped in a burgeoning sexuality of childhood. Teddies as Luke Chueh shows become drunk. Lacombe Benjamin shows the loneliness of childhood, Kokomoo the fright of growing up in a manga style re-enactment.

They related back to Henry Darger but strip away any the rose tinted mirrors. These are beautifully rendered pieces of the imagination laid within a glorious presentation.

Lowbrow, pop surrealism and beyond this worth the effort

Great introduction 2 April 2012
By Rico A. Dominguez - Published on Amazon.com
This collection is like a hardcover art magazine (without ads). It introduces a lot of artists that have become very successful. I agree with other reviews that the picture quality is poor. The paper has a very nice feel to it, but it doesn't help bring out the life of the art work in this book. I like this book, and I like that I found it at a local store for $30. It is definitely not worth the price on Amazon, unless you are a hardcore collector.
Beautiful artbook on illustrations featuring wide-eyed girls 29 Dec 2011
By G. B. J. Grob - Published on Amazon.com
This is a book celebrating illustration artists (mostly women) from all over the world. They seem to have one thing in common: the love for wide-eyed little girls. The book is mainly a picture book, beautifully printed on black paper. Texts are short and sparse. Most of the illustration art is surreal, even gothic. Some of it is sugary, some of it cute, other illustrations are slightly disturbing, or even morbid. All kinds of techniques and styles are presented, but a general feel of unity neverteless remains. The quality of the artwork remains high throughout. Strongly recommended to lovers of illustration, gothic, and surrealism.

The artwork is printed on black paper and looks horrible 14 July 2010

Even if the printing method of this book was more practical and done in a way to showcase the artwork better I would still be underwhelmed by this book. I like about 50% of the artwork, much of it is too cartoony for my tastes. Artwork aside, the thing that really makes this book unsuccessful for me is the paper used which is uncoated and dark making the artwork look very muted and dull.
