Documentary profiling maverick architect Michael Reynolds. Director Oliver Hodge follows the environmentally conscious designer who sees his mission to bring his homes, which are constructed from the everyday waste that society throws away, and are self-sufficient, to the wider public. Having constructed homes from a variety of materials, including used tyres, beer cans and old water bottles, Reynolds believes that in an ever more fragile ecolological climate, his solutions represent the way forward. Hodge follows Reynolds over the course of three years, as he fights the bureaucracy and small-town mindset of local authorities who don't share his vision.
Very inspiring film. Well worth watching. Just shows what can be achieved if you have got commitment, courage and passion in what you are doing. It also demonstrates how a disaster can be a turning point. The World is going crazy with trying to get enough oil to feed its materialistic addiction, we need more people like Mike Renolds to wake us up.
This is a brilliant documentary for anyone who's interested in sustainable housing and off grid living. Michael Renold's has been at the forefront of the 'green' movement long before it became fashionable, leading by example and concience. This documentary exposes the truth about how government systems keep the current unsustainable model for building and infastructure in place despite the current trend of using our carbon footprint as justification for increasing taxes. (rant rant rant...) It's good to see a documentary about the enviroment that provides solutions instead of firm scientific proof that we're doomed as is so often the case. Earthship architecture is the future.
Heroic determination to achieve something for the common good is rare, particularly in the absence of an incentive for personal profit. At least the board of architects that control licensing in New Mexico and even the New Mexico legislature had the courage to open their eyes and eventually see the good that this bohemian offered. Hope its infectious! Showed the film to older students and got a very good response - an inspiration. Unfortunately the strong language, though warranted, prevents this being shown to less than 13 year olds! Meanwhile, lets hope that the Earthship design for carbon neutral houses continues to evolve and become mainstream. Long way to go.
I was told about this guy when hitching back from the Boom festival. He's the real thing - man with endless energy and drive and desire to make positive changes. Documentary well made, even showed it to my kids of 10 and 11 who loved it - except for some bad language!
