Joey Gee & The Come-Ons legendary Shes Mean/ Till The End Of Time appear here in stereo straight from the masters for the first time. Add to that, seven previously unissued titles of equal quality ( including two by Joey Gee) and "Garagemental!" more than lives up to its Ultra Rare sub-title and doesnt waver from start to finish.
Brilliant eye-catching cover art.

Ultra rare,
By Richard "Alice Collector" (Blackpool England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Garagemental! The Cuca Records Story Vol.2 (Audio CD)
For some reason Amazon have mixed up the track order here as the last one -at least on my copy-is by a group called SELTAEB.Which is actually Beatles spelt backwards and pronounced as Selta-Eb!
In 1960 the Wisconsin label suddenly had a hit single-Mule Skinners Blues by the Fendermen and it was leased for wider distribution to the Soma label who later had anotheer hit from a leased recording Surfin' Bird by the Trashmen. Wisconsin isn't especially known as a rock n roll State and the Cuca label hardly figured in its history but it was founded in 1959 mainly to issue polka records but was drawn into recording rock'n'roll mainly of the garage band variety ie British influences. The label ran through the 60s but few were more than local heroes with the Challengers name going against them as they weren't the real ones. However these 3 Cuca collections are very interesting-the 2nd is called Elemental Instrumental-and though hardly important to those who collect Top 40 stuff or whatever the fact is its there for anyone who wants it-anyone willing to at least listen. And by doing so you will hear music not made by corporates but by artists just trying to clutch the brass ring

hello... hello.... hello..... anybody out there? am i writing this review in a complete vacuum? will my words be seen by anyone? i feel existential and alone at the moment. anyway, here goes: this is the 2nd volume of recordings from the obscure cuca records, which operated in southern wisconsin from roughly 1959 to 1969. this disc covers 1965-69, the garage rock and psychedelic era. not as good as the stuff on volume one, "elemental," a wonderfully fun compilation of surf-style instrumentals, this cd is nevertheless fun for its obscurity and the cheesy sincerity with which these young nothern-midwesterners brought to the studio to perform garage-psych music. no threat to be found here at unseating the beatles or the stones or hendrix as the masters of the sixties sound, but that's okay. fun stuff, and i recommend it for lovers of the obscure.

UP THERE WITH ANY OF THE BETTER ONES,
By Syd - Published on Amazon.com

This one is up there with any of the better garage comps. In fact, most of these songs are pretty well written and even sound a bit commercial, with still a lot of raw guts. Most could have been real hits and are not so much the 'Pebbles' brand of garage, but more like the 2131 Michigan Ave attempts at radio friendliness. Better than the Quill stuff, better than the Norman Petty stuff.
