1.0 out of 5 stars Unpedagogic and not made for students 24 Feb 2012
By Leila
Format:Paperback
At first look, this seemed to be an awesome book for studying medical physiology. Oh, how wrong I was. I wish I had never even spent money on this because in the end, I couldn't even use it for my studies and had to consult other books in the library.

The book is to be put in a few words: unpedagogic and messy. It may do well for someone who knows everything about this subject but for students who have just started their course in physiology at university, this is not helpful at all. They write about the different topics using obtuse and complicated sentences, and many times do not even care explain certain things by using statements such as "obviously", assuming someone who is new to the subject will know what they are talking about. To make matters worse, the topics is written and structured in a messy way, consistently referring the students to the next and next chapter. If it was a passing mention, then this is understanding but to spend a couple of paragraphs on one subject and then completely change the subject, that just makes it messy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for medical students 7 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
As a second year student of medicine, I would have to say that this book is, by any means, not nearly good enough for medical students. And that you would surely not pass your exam with this book only.

Apposed to other, even older books, the book has a very ilogical division into chapters, which makes it very hard to find what you are looking for. It also simply skips many parts of the "basics", which is essensially what medical student want!

So my advice is to buy Gayton & Hall instead, much easier to understand, excellent explations, simply a much better book!

1.0 out of 5 stars A real loss 16 Nov 2009
By J. K. Saur - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I used earlier editions of Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology in the 1970's in graduate school, in veterinary school, and later for specialty certification. Up through the 22nd edition, I found this book to be a concise wealth of knowledge.

With the 23rd edition, I learned of the loss of Dr. Ganong, and after reading a few chapters in the book, highlighted what a great loss we have experienced.

Specifically, I waited for this edition to compile the latest information on the coagulation cascade, mechanisms of clotting, and the "newer" information regarding the extrinsic and intrinsic arms of the coagulation cascade. There was nothing new.

I pulled out my 22nd edition, and found the 23rd edition to almost be a verbatim repeat of the 22nd. I say almost, not because there was content added, but because the editors had deleted blocks of medical physiology and common medical pathological variations.

I checked out two other chapters, and gave up.

Checking the references in the chapters of the 23rd edition reveals scarcely any references that weren't in the 22nd edition. The 22nd edition has more references!

This textbook should be re-titled, "Review of Physiology". The medical aspect is gone. Dr. Ganong is gone.

Unfortunately I have put to rest this textbook.
Thank you, Dr. Ganong, for your 22 editions. You are missed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Why are the new authors doing this? 9 Nov 2010
By Nick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Up to the 22nd edition, Ganong's review was one of the only basic science books which wasnt exclusively written for the USMLE test taker. It was a real review of MEDICAL physiology, very complete, also covering areas which aren't high yield but still important in medicine. I believe it was never written to be a review for USMLE exams, way too long and detailed, and sometimes way too advanced for the beginner. I always saw it as a book for the advanced reader who already new its way around. For physicians it is just perfect to review some aspects of physiology without getting bogged down by many lines of explanations for the novice.

Unfortunately Dr. Ganong passed away a couple of years ago and now a new team of authors has taken over. Most passages have been left almost untouched or only shyly altered. Apart from the full color and the larger layout I couldn't make out any major new material. Which is kind of weird, since more than 4 years have passed since the last edition.
But what is utterly disturbing, is the fact that sections and whole chapters have been left out, so called "not-high yield" areas have just been erased. Former chapter 15, for example, has vanished!

This is very disturbing and surely not what Dr. Ganong would have wanted. The 23rd edition is now more geared toward the USMLE test than ever. Very dissapointing, especially if one takes in to account the dozens of books of physioloy for the USMLE Step 1 already on the market. As another reviewer put it nicely, a true loss.

Do we really need another one of these "only the stuff that gets me the right answer is important" books? Or would it be smarter to keep up the masterful work of Dr. Ganong and continue to write a truely comprehensive review of medical physiology?

Even with all my critique, I think it is still easily the best review of physiology around. Especially because of that, I really hope the new authors, which have taken on a demanding legacy, and LANGE Books reencorporate the deleted content in the next edition and change the style of the book back to the way it used to be!

Until that day I will stay with the 22nd edition. But I shall check the 24th edition with great expectations!

Absolutely marvelous.Every clinician must read this book to refresh what they learnt at medical school. I read 1975 edition during my 1st MBBS professional year.
This text book has earned, in my opinion, the best review text book ever credential.
