This is your greatest hits CD, Johnny G was a master 30 Sep 2004
By David G. Lucas - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Ignore all the compilations and "Best of Johnny's", because Ganster of Love and 3 Hours Past Midnight are your definitive recordings. Oh, my, this man smoked 'em out of the hall every time he picked up a guitar. You can hear Johnny's licks in most rock and blues played after this, but he played with style. I'm not a big fan of the 70's funk scene that he took part in, but his blues and rock & roll are all-time hits. It's right here. And get 3 Hours Past Midnight, another top-ten all-time rockin' & rollin' blues recording you'll wonder how you lived without. These two Cds never find their way back to the shelf in my house.

"MOTHER" LOAD 26 Dec 2012
By Jukebox Dave - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
JOHNNY GUITAR WATSON-THE BEST OF JOHNNY GUITAR WATSON/GANGSTER OF LOVE: Long before transforming himself into a popular pimp-dressing funk star during his successful seventies reincarnation, JOHNNY GUITAR WATSON was best known for the psychedelicized blues lick-spewing instrumental SPACE GUITAR, his cocky cult classic GANGSTER OF LOVE (a phrase that RNB fan STEVE MILLER copped from him), and the belly-rubbing ballad CUTTIN' IN. JGW's engaging talk-sing style and down 'n dirty, raw-boned axe work found an even bigger audience via 1977's monster single (and scathing social commentary) A REAL MOTHER FOR YA, which netted him his first Top Twenty album on the pop charts. Swaggering comparisons to THE LONE RANGER, TARZAN and SUPERMAN permeate other playful BEST OF tracks, while the comic rap TELEPHONE BILL, jazzy I NEED IT, and disco-laced BOOTY OOTY all mine fields above and beyond the call of funk. Suffice to say that an innovator like JGW never got stuck in any one groove for very long, always experimenting to satisfy both himself and his fan loyal base via his trick-bag of highly creative, mind-blowing excursions.

RATING: FOUR SCATS
