Product Description

Product Description
The step-by-step companion to Ganster Films. Filmmaking has given us almost every conceivable portrait of organised crime: from dununciations of social problems to dynastic tragedy and from glorifications of a lifestyle choice to tales of loveable rogues. Gangster Films looks at more that two dozen examples of American and British filmmaking and the actors, such as Janes Cagney and Edward G Robinson, who are immediately identified with the gangster movie genre. The films discussed include: Little Caesar, Get Carter, Pulp Fiction, Scarface, The Godfather, Sexy Beast, The Blue Lamp, The Roaring Twenties, The Limey, Angels with Dirty Faces, Once Upon a Time in Americal and Brighton Rock. Tracing a past through the iconography and shifting morality of the genre, detailing technical interests and exploring cast and crew histories, Gangster Films is a fascinating journey through cinema's portrayal of criminals and organised crime.

About the Author
Jim Smith was the co-author of Soul Searching: An Unofficial Guide To The Life and Trials of Ally McBeal and Virgin Film books on Tim Burton and Bond Films, and author of Virgin Film's George Lucas and Manhattan Dating Game: An Unofficial and Unauthorised Guide to Sex and the City. He has written about film and television for a variety of publications, including regular pieces for Film Review.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unrivalled Power of Précis, 16 Aug 2004
By Struwwelpeter (Southampton, UK) - See all my reviews
If one thing can be said for author Jim Smith it is that he knows how to be succinct. Could you summarise the entire plot of 'Pulp Fiction' in two (pretty teensy) paragraphs? I know I sure couldn't. Unfortunately, while this talent would be perfectly suited for a pocket book or some such equivalent, I felt a little bit swizzled once I had purchased this book. I am a big fan of the Virgin Film series, they cover Lynch, Scorcese, Kubrick et al excellently, not definitive but certainly great books to flick through and pick up stuff you otherwise wouldn't know. My problem with this edition however is not with Jim Smith as a writer - he's perfectly clear and covers about everything the subject demands for such a tome, and he co-wrote the Tim Burton book in the series, which is one of my favourites. I think perhaps a co-writer may have been of equal use in this instance, just to maybe flesh it out a little. If nothing other than to take the typeface down a notch. I would find myself on many an occasion just getting into one section of a particular film and then find myself at the next header.
That aside, like I say this book covers pretty much what you'd expect, and it did what the other books in this series have done as far as I'm concerned, in that I've been put on to a whole bunch of films that I otherwise would never have even registered. I'd recommend it, but maybe give it a longer skim in the bookshop than usual before you decide to purchase.
