Product Description

During the early 1930's, a burgeoning Hollywood film industry defined one of the most iconic genres of all time. With the release of three films, "Little Caesar" (1931), "The Public Enemy" (1931), and "Scarface" (1932), Hollywood established the style and audience expectations associated with gangster films that remain in force to the present day. "The Gangster Film Reader" brings together a group of essays, many of which were written specifically for this volume, which present an exhaustive overview of this seminal film genre. This is a thorough and informative volume that is a must-have for any self-respecting film fan.

1.0 out of 5 stars Low star rating for publisher, not author, due to Kindle limitation against loaning the book. 12 Jun 2014

The publisher has not made this e-book loan-able. Generally speaking I find that unacceptable and will consistently down-rate books when the publishers make that decision.

5.0 out of 5 stars Film libraries will consider it a 'must' 17 Jun 2007
By Midwest Book Review - Published on
The rise of the popular gangster film genre began in the early 1930s to reflect the real history and rise of gangsterism in American society, producing early classics which would be released back to back, were modeled on newspaper and real-life situations, and which would bring gangsterism to the public eye by defining and surveying notorious personalities and groups. GANGSTER FILM READER reviews the genre through reprints of key articles, new essays and critical analysis produced for this collection, and over 200 original photos. Film libraries will consider it a 'must', while many a college-level library on social issues will also find the topic relevant to 20th century American history discussions.

I skim though most of the required reading chapters. Nothing to special. The book didn't need to exist in the first place.
