The film, directed by Anurag Basu under the Bhatt's banner Vishesh Films, is a fine film - one of their best.
You remain firmly gripped by the story from the start to the finish, but that grip is admittedly loosened for a very liitle amount of time with a few talk-heavy portions. The story is good, the performances are good and the cinematography is consistent. The title Gangster implies that it is a typically violent bollywood action movie about the underworld, but the tagline 'a love story' gets you thinking about another angle to it. That has been nicely done and actually sums up the film to an extent - a mix of romance, action, drama and suspense. The negative thing is the modern and irreverent interpretation of love on one side and, in that respect, there are a couple of scenes, albeit brief (can be forwarded and left unnoticed), that are unsuitable for family viewing.
