The film was ugly and I turned it off after about 15 minutes.The soundtrack hardly represents music of the period which would have been Ragtime or brass bands and is only a snatch of the music used.
Somehow Jocelyn Pook and Peter Gabriel seems out of place
Ideally this should be resissued in a De Luxe edition so that all the missing music can be included on a 2nd CD

The soundtrack to Gangs of New York proves to be almost as epic as the film itself.
The highlight of course is the Golden Globe winning song, by U2, 'Hands that built America,' but there is far more to this collection. 'Gangs' soundtrack happily moves from an old Irish Ballad, to a U2 rock song, to Chinese classical music, and as a conquence revokes the film in every sense.
The highlights include Howard Shores original music, entitled 'Brooklyn Heights' aswell as the Jocelyn Pook, 'Dionysus.'
Also 'SIgnal to Noise' by Peter Gabriel is included. I found this piece to be rather out of place in the film, (it is played in the opening fight sequence,) simply becasue it does not sound appropriate to the era. But it is still a great piece of music, in spite of that.
If I have one slight complaint, it is that my personal favourite from the film, the piece played at the dance when Jenny picks Amsterdam, is not included. But considering that there were 86 pieces of music used in Gangs, the soundtrack picks most of the highlights.
A good soundtrack, with a little bit of everything thatmakes 'Gangs' the Epic it is.

Gangs of New York is one of the most eagerly awaited films of the past decade and the music compliments the film very well indeed. The standout track is undoubtedly U2's "Hands That Built America". The version on the soundtrack is different from the version on U2's Greatest Hits 1990-2000 with Sharon and Andrea Corr playing violin and tin whistle respectively. This gives the song more of a Celtic feeling, further enhanced by The Edge's strings arrangement. Peter Gabriel also provides a new track titled "Signal to Noise" which is used to great effect during the film's fight scenes. Composer Howard Shore's "Brooklyn Heights" is in three parts all with a different sound but very effective nevertheless. Along with the various styles of Celtic music, old and new tracks, Gangs of New York is a fantastic soundtrack. Throughout the film, 86 pieces of music were used but this was cut to 18 for the soundtrack by Martin Scorsese.The only problem is that some of the tracks only last for about 1 minute, making the listener feel short-changed. Overall, this soundtrack is definitely worth the money for its various styles of Celtic music and ability to "tug at the heartstrings".
