Reviews

The iconic director-choreographer Busby Berkeley's first full-length film in Technicolor is well established as being perhaps the most visually stunning spectacle of any Hollywood musical. But to focus on this risks overlooking its exuberant performances, gleeful humour, sensational music and glowing romance, amidst countless other pleasures.

A young soldier's fast-struck love affair with a New York City nightclub singer, despite his long-standing betrothal to a wealthy childhood friend, provides the catalyst for this dizzying parade of home-front melodrama, comic set-pieces and mind-boggling musical numbers (including 'The Lady in the Tutti-Frutti Hat' and 'The Polka-Dot Polka').

Featuring some of the most popular musical stars of its day, including Alice Faye, the incomparable Carmen Miranda, and the legendary Benny Goodman, along with brilliantly funny supporting turns from Edward Everett Horton, Eugene Pallette, and Charlotte Greenwood, The Gang's All Here is an outlandishly surprising classic from one of the Hollywood dream factory's most influential innovators. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present a world premiere of a stunning new restoration on Blu-ray.

This is a film to sit back to and let the spectacular film unfold before you. The plot line is a thin excuse to hang an extravagant and entertaining film on. This has it all. Voluptuous girls, catchy music, kaleidoscopic sets and glamorous costumes. This is war time escapism that was Fox's most expensive film of the time achieving box office record returns. Director and choreographer Busby Berkeley had a free reign to let loose and he certainly did with his first Technicolor venture. He was also free from the constraints of Darryl Zanuck, Fox's owner, (William Le Barron produced). The film is memorable for many reasons, most notably the Berkeley sequences, as outrageously conceived as executed, featuring the persona of the zany, dizzy Brazilian bombshell, Carmen Miranda. Her surrealistic rendition of 'The Lady With the Tutti Frutti Hat', performed in a mammoth head-dress of fruit accompanied by an erotic chorus line of girls in tropical attire waving huge Freudian bananas and oversized strawberries is something to behold, never to be forgotten. Carmen Miranda sings:

'I wonder why does everybody look at me,
And then begin to talk about a Christmas tree'.

The finale, 'The Polka Dot Polka', is a Busby Berkeley production of a nightclub chorus in front of revolving mirrors, neon-lit hoops allowing an endless variety of shapes and patterns. This was Alice Faye's last film for 19 years (pregnant and announcing her retirement from films). Her songs are a relief from the hullaballoo around her. 'No Love, No Nothin', is sung with poignancy followed by another moving ballad, 'A Journey To a Star', set against a moonlight background of a Staten Island ferryboat. Both were huge hits for Alice.

The thought occurred to me whilst watching this Blu-ray of ‘The Gangs All Here’, there is no way they could make a dreadful remake of this lightweight great fun movie, full of music and colourful numbers. This is Busby Berkeley wartime escapism at its very best. There are plenty of full reviews about the film, so I thought I would limit my comments to the quality of the Blu-ray. It must be remembered that we are looking at a seventy-year old film, which was shot in the early days of Technicolor features. I have previously bought the DVD which I considered was of good picture quality and as I very enjoyed the film, I decided to upgrade and buy the Blu-ray. The picture quality of this new release is very good, but not outstanding. There is minor visible damage on the image quality and as to be expected not quite as sharp as a modern release. Overall if you like me are a fan of the film it is worth buying this new release, I would normally give this disc four stars, but allowing for the age of the film I feel its worth five stars.
