most of the other books about english gangsters centre on london in the 60s, which is good for readers of a certain age and mentality. this is about gangs and gangsters in 1 of englands major provinces in the recent past. some of the lads in here would have been a right handful for any of the older generation. they are afraid of no one or nothing. i really enjoyed reading this book. the author holds a good distance from his subject. some other books about gangsterism are too respectful of their subjects and descend to hagiography, glossing over the cruelty and wickedness of their actions, (they only ever hurt their own etc). this book is 'more real', a good read for those under 40, (especially those who enjoyed the madchester days), who are not starstruck by the celebrity gangster industry

Frighteningly real 30 Jan 2004
By Chris
Format:Hardcover
When I heard about this book I just had to go out and buy it. I was one of the clubbers who frequented Manchester clubs from the early 80's through to the mid 90's, when I'd heard a lot about the conflicts going on in and around the city. On reading it I was shocked to find that these disturbances were far more widespread and devastatingly violent than I could possibly have imagined. It's a real account of the battles played out on inner city streets by characters who had nothing else to occupy their time. Drugs, money, girls, all surface as causes for the acts of extreme violence portrayed in this book. A damn good read!

This is an interesting insight into a dark and dangerous lifestyle. Charting the growth of Manchester's breed of new gang culture, it plots the ups and downs of both individuals and gangs. Reading about the "Cheetham Hill Gang" and the "Longsight Crew" is exciting but depressingly repetitive. Time after time, we hear stories of violence fuelled young men who crimes spiral up, leading ineveitably to murder in pursuit of control of the lucrative drugs trade. Peter Walsh guides us through the maze with an authorative hand and if, like me, you started with very little knowledge, this book will be an informative read.
