Though this classic Irish traditional CD is almost twenty years old - I only acquired it very recently, and am very glad that I did. Featuring one of Irelands most able - and engaging traditional singers Maighread ni Dhomhnaill, she is backed up by her sister Triona ni Dhomhnaill, brother Micheal O Domhnaill, and multi/musician Donal Lunny and company.
The album encompasses a variety of song styles, with most having a sound pedigree in the broad corpus of Irish Traditional music. Six are in Gaelic and 4 in English.
The more I play it - the more I like it... Initially I wondered if there may be an excess of musical backing on some of the tracks, and.. dare I say it? I will...a kind of 'Easy listening', 'Eurovision' type dynamic...(eeek!) However I have now got over that - and I really like it!! The particular strengths, and vibrancy in Maighread's voice ensure that it/she isn't overcome by the strong musical accompaniment - and it actually works very well.
Nonetheless, I particularly like 'An Clar Bog Deal' agus 'An Cailin Gaelach' and similar - which are slower, and richer in a different way to some of the others - though the variety of course, is a real strength in an album like this. They are all playing in my head now (thankfully not at the same time...!). Though 'Greenwood Laddie' is still a bit of a challenge!
This album, plus the one that followed - the fantastic 'Idir na Dha Sholas', (which I have reviewed earlier) clearly highlight the musical agility, and warmth present in Maighread's vocals. Her distinctive voice soars high above those of her contemporaries, and has a richness, and a resonance that is instantly recognisable. My own feeling is that she sings best alone - (or with minimal accompaniment) where she can spread her musical wings - without any constraints...
If you like genuine traditional ('sean nos') Irish songs/singing, with an effervescent musicality - I would grab this now and enjoy...
