Up For The Cup,
By
This review is from: The Gammage Cup: A Novel of the Minnipins (Carol Kendall's Tales of the Minnipins) (Hardcover)
I first read this entertaining book, then called simply "The Minnipins", in a Puffin paperback, more years ago than I care to count. Recently I have dusted off my battered copy to read to my four year old daughter. The story is as rewarding and involving as I remembered, but the sudden, savage genocide of the bad guys, the rather two dimensional "Mushroom People", was unexpectedly bloodthirsty. I do not remember being at all bothered by this as a child, but as an adult reading it to a child, it felt disturbing. Maybe this is a case of being needlessly over-protective...I re-read this book many times, and it did not turn me into a psychopathic killer. It did not even put me off mushrooms...Maybe we are used to a less graphic depiction of violence in children's books, a modern day Mowgli would probably befriend Sher Khan and save him from extinction. Even so, the battle scenes in this novel are jarring, coming as the culmination of a tale of prosaic, even mundane, everyday activities. The real joy of the book is in the characterisation, particularly Muggles and Mingy. The scene where Mingy proposes to Muggles is perfectly judged, and quite touching. The message of rebellion being justified when faced with officious conformists is nicely put across, in my opinion; Painting your door red, in a sleepy village where all the other houses have sensible green doors, is an image and a sentiment even the youngest child can recognise! The Gammage Cup itself is a minor part in the story, and a poor title in my view, but, then, for me, it will always be "The Minnipins", so I suppose that doesn't really matter. One point that troubled me when I first read it, and still seemed mysterious when reading it now : What is "Walter the Earl" the Earl of ? This kind of unanswerable question should not be left hanging in Children's literature...it is unfair to parents!

A wonderful book, still great fun thirty+ years later!,

This review is from: Gammage Cup (Odyssey Classic) (Paperback)
I first read this book in fifth or sixth grade when it was brand new. Thirty+ years later it is still my favorite children's book of all time. I have re-read it many times and have given many gift copies to my most deserving friends (who have all loved it, too!) The wonderful story shows that being different is a valuable gift and not the curse it can sometimes feel to be. Different types of people, eventually working together and all contributing their special attributes to help each other--what could be more timely (or needed) today? This book is a real treasure and deserves to be rediscovered (and thoroughly enjoyed) by a whole new generation. One of the very best ever!!!

Childhood favorite,
By A Customer
This review is from: Gammage Cup (Odyssey Classic) (Paperback)
I read this book when I was in grade school, and when I found an old copy in our local library, I was delighted to be able to share it with my children. This is a classic story of how those who are different and are rejected by society can often prove to be heroes. I loved this book and cannot recommend it too highly.
