4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it needs to do 29 Nov 2012

I've had the Gametel Android Controller for about four weeks now, so I think I can give an objective overview of its pro's and con's.
In essence, the Gametel Controller does exactly what it is designed for. It lets you play games on your smart phone in a much more pleasant way than by using the virtual keypad on your phones' screen. The controller's keypad works quite well, and the buttons you push are directly translated to actions on the screen, so there are no delays or whatsoever. I did find that sometimes the diagonal directions are not correctly registrated, so your game character will move to the right/left or squat. But that's a minor issue.
Contrary to the virtual keypad on your phone, you can actually hold a button while pressing another one. For instance, while playing Megaman, you can charge your weapon while jumping or running. With the virtual keypad, this is not possible. Regarding phone type, I have a HTC Desire and a friend of mine a Samsung Galaxy II, and both were attached on the Gametel without problems. A phone that is wider that the Samsung Galaxy II won't fit, because the Galaxy II just fits to the attach point of the Gametel (it's a clamp).
The Gametel is quite light, but having a phone connected to it does not outbalance the whole. So while holding it, you won't have the feeling that the phone/Gametel will fall out of your hands because the top part (phone) is heavier than the lower part (the Controller).

There are however some minor issues: first of all, when initally establishing the Bluetooth connection, I was unable to connect to the Gametel Controller using the prescribed method in the manual. I had to go the Bluetooth connection options of my phone and manually link the Controller to my phone to overcome this problem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Needs more support. 11 Jun 2013

I bought this for my galaxy s3 as I missed the gamepad on the Xperia play. However, the problem I have with it is the sheer lack of supported games. I believe there is a list of about 40 games which are supported on their website.

Having said this for emulators, I get the feeling that it is designed for this, it worked very well. Once you have connected it via bluetooth which worked straight away, then map the buttons in the emulator, the Gametel worked like my previous Xperia play. The clip was strong and just fit my Galaxy S3 in and the d-pad, buttons and shoulder buttons felt good.

Overall it is a well made product and is excellent for emulators, but it is let down by its lack of supported games and it is by no means a replacement for something like the Xperia Play.

Not bad but set up for individual games can be difficult (ie syncing the buttons to carry out relevant actions)

Getting it set up was pretty painless on Android - Nexus 4. I installed the windows application from the website to upgrade the firmware, mine shipped with V1 and the newest at the time was V1.5, using just a USB to Micro USB cable connected to the computer. Once the firmware was flashed you need to pair the controller to your device which works like pairing any device and is simple enough if you follow the instructions. Charging uses a USB to Micro USB cable and has a led indicator to show charging status. It also has an auto off function to conserve battery.

I use the HID gamepad mode to play emulator games and have so far tested it with only PPSSPP, works perfect with it. Buttons can be rebound in the Gametel app along with some other settings though if your emulator or game allows key rebinding you can also set the keys up that way. The controller can function in a couple of different modes to suit different games, devices and OS's and it can disable the volume keys as a setting if they are being pushed while snapped in.

The clamp that holds the phone feels sturdy enough but it will likely snap if you apply too much pressure on it. It holds my Nexus 4 with not much more room to spare and there's a slight lip over the phone when it's in place that stops it from falling out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite nice gadget 15 Mar 2014

Worked flawlessly to this day (over a year). It does have something loose inside of it when i shake it though, but this doesn't seem to affect it's performance. The only issue for me is the fact that sometimes, you accidentally move in the wrong direction, as the directional pad's positions seem to "bleed" into each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic bit of kit. 2 Feb 2014

As a retro gamer I bought this so that I could use MAME4Droid, it arrived quickly and was easy to set up. Highly recommended to anyone who likes their retro gaming, it just about stretches to fit my HTC One with Greatshield Terra Series brushed metal case.
If you don't need the analogue controllers, why bother with paying twice the price for them?

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheap but ultimately useless
Doesn't support any iOS game I own! Useless! Probably has much better support for Android but that isn't any good when you have an iPhone.

3.0 out of 5 stars It works but D-pad is very stiff and unusable for many games
This control pad syncs with your phone using an app you have to download from the Play store. Once done, it can be used to play games on your phone. Read more
