Product Description

From the Publisher

THE comprehensive guide to dice play
Dice have amused, entertained and puzzled mankind since the dawn of civilisation. The timeless fascination of the six-sided cube is enhanced by the need for accurate calculation of probability and the intellectual challenge of making the right choices.

This book explains almost 150 games and variations, compiled by world authority Dr. Reiner Knizia. The collection ranges from early games whose origins are lost in the mists of antiquity, right up to newly invented games that have never been published before. The rules of all games are explained lucidly, and the tactical advice given is explicit.

Start with lucky scoring games and counter games, before you move on to explore the theory of probability. Then you are ready to tackle betting games like craps (including casino versions), 'jeopardy' games, category games like yahtzee, progression games like poker dice, and bluffing games like liar dice. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Everyone plays and enjoys dice games - dice have been used for longer than playing cards as a source of amusement. This book goes a long way to explaining why: the sheer diversity of ways that dice can be used to play games is reflected here. Reiner Knizia has assembled some eighty dice games, together with an equal number of variations and game variants, to produce a singularly entertaining book. The games range from historical favourites, through popular pub and parlour games, betting (casino) games and even some original designs by the author himself.
Each game's rules are explained very clearly, together with numerous examples of play. Additional notes on winning tactics and strategies are also included, so everyone can play an optimum game. Player numbers range from solitaire up to multi-player party games. Many games are suitable for families and groups with young players; at the other end of the spectrum there are games for the toughest of opponents. There's a game for everyone somewhere between these covers.
The games are categorised neatly between two principle types: games of luck, where players have no control over an outcome; and games of influence, where they do have some direction over their eventual destiny. Younger players would probably enjoy more games from the first two chapters, which cover lucky scoring and lucky counter games.
Before covering betting (or casino) games, the author takes one short chapter to explain the principles of dice probabilities. This is not as daunting as might be expected, and it is invaluable for understanding the odds used in casinos. Essential reading for any one setting foot in Las Vegas!

In years to come they will write books about Reiner Knizia. If nothing else, he will redefine the word 'focused'. Not only does the man wake up to find two or three game designs waiting on the bedside notebook, he also fits in the occasional book project. Dice Games Properly Explained is his latest, and as usual one can hardly think of a reason why it should not be on your bookshelf. Part of the reason is that it is an absolute bargain at £3.99. The last time I looked at paperbacks they were twice that price. Anyway, as one might expect, this is a comprehensive survey of dice games. From simple, luck based games to games of bluff. There must be over 100 games covered, some traditional, some newly invented for the book. It is a good read and I particularly enjoyed the short chapter on probabilities. Highly Recommended.

This must be a strong contender for the title of "best bargain" in the entire Amazon catalogue. The publishers could double the price and it'd still be a bargain.
Even if you tore out the pages covering games mentioned elsewhere, you'd still be left with nine -- NINE -- previously unpublished games by one of the world's leading designers, several of which could easily have been sold on their own for many times the cost of this book.
Or forget those pages -- who needs a new game anyway :) -- and just concentrate on the coverage of existing games. People are still buying the commericial version of Yahtzee at around five times the cost of this book. Bluff won the German Game of the Year award, at a similar cost.
If you like winning, buy a copy for yourself, and hide it from your friends. The analysis included will enable you to repeat the exchange from an old WC Fields film: "Is this a game of luck?" "Not the way I play it..." If you're a nicer person than that :) it makes an inexpensive present suitable for all the family. Young children can start with the quick and simple luck games, while adults can be challenged by the ones where skill and bluff are more important.
Just feel sorry for Americans, who have to wait until February 2001 before it's published there (according to Amazon.com). Hey, armed with the analysis here, you could probably finance a trip to the States by offering to play some of the games within for money...

If you love dice games, this book is just that. You will find loads of different games from family favourites like Yahtzee to highly addictive competitive games like 10, 000 or Farkle as it is also known. The greatest plus of these dice games is that you only need a few dice, a flat surface and this book to get you started into hours of fun with family and friends.
