Book Description

From the balcony of his house, Mike Haines can see the quiet, commonplace beauty of the Holliday farm. But what he remembers is the little sister of his high school girlfriend, Dusty who grew up there. As a teen, Dusty had gone off the rails but when she was a kid, she was sweet, she was funny and she had a special bond with Mike. But after high school, she took off and Mike never saw her again.

Then tragedy strikes Dusty's family, she comes back into town and Mike thinks she hasn't changed back to the sweet, funny girl he knew but instead continued to be selfish and thoughtless, leaving her family alone to deal with their mourning. So he seeks her out and confronts her in an effort to understand what went wrong and to force her to sort herself out.

He finds out quickly he's wrong about Dusty Holliday. Very wrong. And right after Mike discovers that, the bond they had years before snaps back into place in ways he would never suspect.

But Mike Haines had a bad marriage then he played games of the heart for a good woman. And lost. In order to protect himself and his kids, he's cautious, he's careful to read the signs and he's not interested in finding a woman he has to fix.

Then he learns what happened to Dusty and he thinks she needs to be fixed. He swings, he misses and in this new game of hearts, for Dusty, Mike just got strike three.

More About the Author

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing's changed.

All Kristen has ever wanted to do was write (well, and be the Queen of the World, but you gotta start small). Somehow, she got into the charity biz and found another calling. She worked for the Rocky Mountain MS Center and the Colorado Neurological Institute before moving to England. Now she does both, working for The Pituitary Foundation in Bristol, UK by day, sitting at her computer typing out stories by night.

Kristen now lives in England and got there by way of Denver, where she lived for twelve years, but she grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. Her Mom moved her and her brother and sister in with their grandparents when Kristen was six. Her grandparents had a daughter much younger than her Mom so they all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. Kristen grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers and REO Speedwagon (and the wardrobes that matched). Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not her best 14 Sept. 2012

I think maybe I have read too many Kristen Ashley books in the last few weeks. Reading them too close together you really notice how much she recycles her phrases, sex scenes, plots and characters!
I was a bit disappointed in this book. I liked Mike in Vi & Cal's book but when I started reading this one his character seemed to have changed and just became another Alpha Male who talked like all the other Alpha Males in Kristen's book!
The standout for me in this book was Reesee and Fin's story. I loved it and loved Fin!
I didn't like the 'crime' aspect of this book. What happens to Dusty I found a bit far fetched. In fact in all the books I have read by Kristen, a similar thing happens to the heroine near the end of the book!
The sex scenes as well are becoming very repetitive, the phrases used by the H&H and the positions used!
I will take a break now from Kristen's novels. I would still recommend you to read this one but for me it did not live up to it's 5 star reviews.

This is a beautiful beautiful love story!

Or two actually!

Mike and Roxy

Reece and Fin!

Love it!

Although, must say, I find it hard to connect to Roxie and found her a bit annoying. But, is it Roxie herself (who I found rolling my eyes at a few times, since she was so bloody perfect!!) or the fact that I have had this issue with KA heroines in the past, and Roxie came at the end of a massive months long re read of a few KA series?

Once again, a woman, with no experience in a "mother" role, comes in like the Child Rearing Guru Wonder Woman, and can bake 10 layer cakes, decorate, advise, be brilliant and awesome, while the birth mother/ex-wife is a cow! Although, the ex wife here is not as bad as other KA ex wives, but that is because we had Dusty's sister being the evil witch for no real reason.

I love KA books, really love them, but I am way way over that!

So, after my rant, I shall just finish by putting down some of my favourite parts of this book. (although my absolute favourite parts were any part with Fin and Reece! They stole my heart!)

"Mike did not, until that moment know The 'Burg's high school hierarchy. But at that moment he knew Finley Holliday, even as a junior, reigned as king.
And his eyes going directly to Reesee then his feet taking him there meant he'd just declared in front of thirty plus kids who he intended to make his queen.
"F***," he muttered under his breath and heard Dusty chuckle but he didn't take his eyes off his daughter who tipped her head back and he saw her lips form the word "Hey," to which Fin's lips formed the word "Hey" back.

3.0 out of 5 stars Loved Fin and Reesee 23 Oct. 2013

I must admit I loved Mike in At Peace and I couldn't wait to read his book but it wasn't all that I expected in fact the highlight of this book for me was Fin, Reesee and No I loved these kids. Mike wasn't quite the same and I know Dusty was cool and everything but I out so sick of little dusty, like N Howe said in her review the sex scenes are repetitive and it doesn't do to read too many Kristen books too close together, I also felt the crime aspect was lacking, it was good to touch base with past characters but for me this wasn't one of her best.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my favourite.... 24 Feb. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Let me start this by sayin I love KA books! i havent read one i havent enjoyed until

The book seemed to level off in the centre and i found myself bored, I think there could have been more in store for Dusty and Mike they seemed to have the perfect relationship 3 chapters into the book. I read on as i thought it might be building up to a nail biting finale. I was wrong, the drama at the end was a bit over the top and not the usual KA gripping ending.

The positive is the character of Dusty, she was so easy to bound with, she is the cool aunt everyone wants, strong, loyal and independant.

The secondary love story of Clarisse and Fin is a big plus to see how they bond over tragedy.

Maybe not so dynamic as the last 3books in the series but no less another brilliant story of Dusty and Mike from the Burg. I fell for Mike in Cal & Vi' s story and was looking forward to a happy ending for him and I thought this story was sweet and mostly gentle, which was half Mike and Dusty and half his daughter Rees and Dusty' s nephew Fin. Again all my beloved characters from the previous 3 books were there which I love, and we had our expected bit of excitement, although it didn't come till close to the end. Just what is expected from a Kristen Ashley book, again highly recommended from me 5 stars, cannot be less due to the quality of writing. Looking forward to reading the Promise next.

5.0 out of 5 stars great read 4 Nov. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Well at last Mike Haines has finally found a woman to call his own. Mike a cop with two kids and a dog falls for his friends sister which she used to be in love with when she was younger. But Mike also dated the sister when they were in high school and well let the story begin.
It's actually her nephew and his daughter that get them together after she leaves town. She comes back to stay with her sister in law to try and get her on her feet as the sister is trying to buy the farm and take away there home. It really is a good story keeps you glued to the book and don't want to put down.
