This is one of the half dozen best books on chess. Tartakower was equally at home in all types of positions as the games amply demonstrate. What I particularly like are the copious verbal explanations for the moves played which are well backed up by analysis of the key variations. Too often more modern books rely too heavily on analysis alone, which can be daunting for less experienced players. There is a good mix of opening theory here, alot of which is not mainstream, I remember Myers opening bulletin recommending this title for that very reason, and chess players who find their intellect stimulated by following more unusual opening variations will find this book invaluable. Throughout, Tartakower comes accross as avery sincere and genuine person, lacking the conceit and arrogance of some of his contemporaries. There is also much excellent endgame play here. If you want to gain a better understanding of all areas of the game of chess there are few books in the same league as this one.
