Book Description

1 Jan 2001
Gamebirds are among the most familiar of bird groups, because they can be seen along urban fringes and even within the cities and towns themselves, but more particularly because they have been used by man since prehistoric times for both food and sport. They are divided into waterfowl and upland gamebirds. Here the authors, both highly respected authorities in their field, summarise a large body of scientific research and present the most pertinent and interesting facts in an informative and readable fashion.

Gamebirds of South Africa by Rob Little & Tim Crowe, Illustrated by Simon Barlow This book is perhaps such as Audubon might have created. The 135 pages contain many absolutely beautiful full color illustrations by Barlow, a renowned artist who specializes in painting birds. The paintings are so perfect I had to look carefully to determine if they are photographs! The book documents five species of birds: Francolins, spurfowls, Quails, Guineafowls, and SandGrouse. The detailed information of four pages each tells all about many different varieties of these species. The authors, who are both Gamebird Research Authorities, include information regarding description, distribution and habitat, food, feeding and breeding, classification, and the status and conservation of each variety. The suggested further reading for each is extensive. This is a beautiful collector book for any ornithologist.
