We all know Game of Thrones is a slow-burner of a television show. Every season so far has started at a sedate pace and then catapulted, by around episode eight, into a frenetic crescendo of political intrigue, violence, cliffhanger endings, and a little bit more violence.
After Season 4, which, in my opinion, from the Purple Wedding to the Mountain vs the Viper, and from the Battle of the Wall to Tyrion murdering Shae and Tywin, raised the stakes considerably, Season 5 is something of a step down in terms of action. Season 4 was excellent adapted from the source material, and relatively faithful to the books. It was excellently acted and written, and the series had a sense of direction. There was plenty in the way of "holy s**t!" moments, as well, with the Night's Watch mutineers sub-plot, Littlefinger establishing himself as a major player in the Game, and Dany exiling Jorah.
But Season 5, after the unrelenting fury of its predecessor, should have, if anything, raised the stakes even further. There were plenty of high points: "Hardhome" is, without doubt, the single best episode in the entire show so far; episodes 7, 9, and 10 also ensured the season came to a relatively exciting conclusion. The Jon Snow and Cersei storylines were perfectly executed; again, they were faithful to the source material. Seeing Tyrion finally meet up with Team Targaryen was also massively fulfilling, though his scenes with Varys and Jorah over the course of the season were also massively enjoyable. There is a recurring theme here - any scene that features Peter Dinklage just exhumes awesomeness. Alfie Allen gives another compelling performance as Theon Greyjoy/Reek, the character you love to hate, but can't help nut fee a little sorry for, as well.Read more ›

It is arguable that Game of Thrones Series 5 has not been the best installment of this remarkable programme. Indeed, was it not for the shocks and surprises of the last three brilliant episodes "Hard home", "The Dance of Dragons" and "Mothers Mercy" this may have been viewed as a relative disappointment. This was a very slow burn at the outset and some of the plots have been messy and convoluted. It triumphed with precision however as the series drew to a genuinely thrilling conclusion setting it up perfectly for the next round.
Issues include the Dorne story. In George R.R. Martin's book, this hardly screams off the page. Unfortunately, it had the same impact on the screen with Jamie and Bronn trying to form a sort of comedy double act, whilst his final scene with Myrcella had a predictable inevitability about it. The loose ends in the plots are also becoming a problem. What has happened to the Tyrell’s for example? We knew that Series Five would be a Bran Stark free zone, but it is difficult to explain why bearing in mind the sheer amount of energy that was invested in that storyline in previous services. Finally, it has been a relatively disappointing series in relation to Ayra with the "the Many Faced God" plot often drowning in too much mysticism and a slow apprenticeship.
This has been a brutal series not least Ramsey Bolton’s horrific treatment of Sansa Stark. It generated pages of controversy and comment. It could be argued that this was handled with care since the impact came from the terrible look on the face of her childhood friend Theon, who had been made to watch.Read more ›

If you've read my Season 4 review you'll know I've read the books and I'm a HUGE fan of the show.
With that in mind, my thoughts on season 5 are torn.
Firstly, the positives. All (well, most) of our favourite characters are back and on top form. Also there's an assortment of new characters to get introduced to, and we finally get to see Dorne. On a more technical point, the production is as good as we've come to expect and it's certainly still well worth watching.
On the flip side, the season seemed to take a while to get going. On reflection this is more like what we were used to before the blockbuster that was season 4 so I guess it's well paced if viewed on it's own but compared to last year it left me feeling a bit, I dont know, slow. Also, personally I found the sandsnakes (a group of new characters) very disappointing compared to what I was expecting and hoping for from them.
In the grey middle between the good and bad are the book deviations. How you feel about these (if you've read the books) will vary. For me some work better than others but that's to be expected. I will warn any readers who haven't seen it that you will get a little annoyed by at least one death of a non-dead book character (there's a couple scattered through but one in particular really irked me).
Storywise, season 5 provides everything you would expect - unexpected alliances, twists, turns, betrayals, gruesome murders, steady plot progression, etc.Read more ›
