5.0 out of 5 stars Has Great Potential 14 Feb 2003

This starter kit essentially gives you a 3D game engine, a nice user friendly model and map editor and the ability to create pretty much any game you can think of.
Anyone who has created levels for Half-Life, Unreal etc and wants to go one step further, will be right at home here.
The engine supports dynamic lights, hi res tectures, split screen multiplayer, 2d games and has a whole host of templates to use and edit. Upgrades available online will give you true online multiplayer support, bump mapping, real time deformable terrain and all sorts of stuff you would expect from top engine...

5.0 out of 5 stars Good 18 Jan 2002

It's probably the best starter kit you can find (If you are not a programmer). This will help lead you in with a nice GUI and can give very fast results or do more complicated projects.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not really all you need! 28 Feb 2002
By A Customer
I was really keen to buy this book as the GameStudio program has heaps of potential. What you get here is the basic standard version which does NOT support C++ code (it uses a scripting language similar to C though). You will need to BUY the SDK for GameStudio which is as expensive as the kit itself, if you really want to do anything serious using C++ and GameStudio.
The books included are excellent references and having a C++ compiler to learn is also good. The Direct X 8.0 SDK is free to download, so all your'e really getting here is convenience. (GameStudio is only Direct X 7.0 compliant)Unfortunately the 'misleading' marketing lets this package down.
Don't get me wrong...it is excellent value for money. Just be aware that you will need to spend more money to make a decent game..unless you want to code an engine from scratch, which is beyond the documentation in this package.

This program is the best yet. I have found that it is a great improvment over previous versions and is much easyer to use. It combines an easy to use interface with great graphics and powerful utilities. Over all it is one of the best game programming creators out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Programming Kit 4 Nov 2002
By Lebageek - Published on Amazon.com
I bought this software with many worries. I've tried plenty of times to learn game designing but I could not take the painstaking C++ code. Well, this program was perfect. It has level and model designs that are so simple a 5 year old could do it, but at the same time are very effective. If you have any fears you won't be able to pick up, forget about them, the tutorial with the software is incredible, taking you step by step with examples on how to make good levels and models. They even give you resources for more designs to use. This software is well worth the money for a newcomer or an expert.

1.0 out of 5 stars GOTTA BE SERIOUS 5 Jan 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This is to all the people who actually thinking that if you buy this program it's the "easy way" to break into the gaming industry. I mean...get real this kit comes with everything set up for you and no code implementation is necessary. Well WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE!. In the gaming industry if you want to actually be a game programmer you're going to have to face reality, because nothing is, "set up", for you and the people in the industry will want you to program GREAT games from SCRATCH. I advise if you save your money and buy "C++ How to Program (4th Edition)"
by Harvey M. Deitel, Paul J. Deitel. it's not focused on games but hey! it's a solid start.
