Product Description

Product Description

Alix, Courtney and Fern aren't 'bad' girls. They're respectable sixth form students who've hit on a great way to pull in good money. They can buy designer gear, holiday abroad, and aren't even out of place at a millionaire's party. As long as they follow their own 'rules', and keep themselves safe, who cares how they earn the extra cash? No one's going to get hurt. Or are they ...? This is a gripping story of teenage girls who use sex to make money - and then find that money is not after all going to resolve all ills.

From the Back Cover

Alix, Courtney and Fern aren’t 'bad' girls. They’re respectable sixth form students who think they’ve hit on a great way to pull in good money. They can buy designer gear, holiday abroad, and aren’t even out of place at a millionaire’s party. As long as they follow their own ‘rules’, and keep themselves safe, what’s the harm in it? No one’s going to get hurt. Or are they …?

A controversial novel that explodes myths and exposes risks as it takes a frank and honest approach to a taboo subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Treasure!!!!, 21 Jun 2007
I purchased the book in all it's glossy covered glory, and got it home. Before I read it, all I knew about it was that it was about prostitutes, and from the blurb I gleamed that there were three of them and somebody might get hurt...

Controversial? Yes. To be honest, how can a book about college students selling themselves for sex not be? But seedy? Definitely not. The girls don't even start their business until about a third through the novel, and before then, the characters are developed sufficiently enough that when they do, it is clear that they have motivation behind their scheme.

The story is told through the eyes of three very different girls. None of them are really bad girls - and their different perspectives on what they are doing makes the story much more interesting. Fern is a shy, naïve girl who seems much younger than her seventeen years. Her struggle with dyslexia and her desperation to get to art college makes her a believable and well-rounded character. Courtney hides a dark secret behind her dark attire, which is always going to make a reader want to carry on reading! Her motivation for becoming a prostitute, and her attitude towards it, is realistic and contrasts to Fern's. And Alix...well, Alix is glamorous, beautiful, the envy of Courtney and Fern. Alix is the brains behind the idea, and becomes a kind of pimp-figure later on, only `servicing' her favourite customers. I never really liked her to start with, but this is a clever trick of the writing. We are not forced to like her, but she is a fascinating character, and she gets her comeuppance in the end. Haha!

So... the story. Realistic and controversial - the sort of thing that is perfect for Young Adult Fiction. And it doesn't end all happy-sparkly-beautiful. It never could, and there's a shocking twist that will make you have to re-read the page, thinking "blimey!!" (in a Russell-Brand kind of way). I don't want to ruin it for you, because you should read it yourself. I kind of saw it coming, and so did the characters, but it was still a shocking, thrilling and exciting event that befalls them.

This book is perfect for summer travellings - it's absorbing enough to occupy your whole flight to exotic lands this season!! To be honest, it's great any time of year, really. If you like books by Melvin Burgess and the like, this book is definitely for YOU.

Buy it, read it, love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars You gotta read this book, 18 Jun 2007

How good is this story? Read it and see! This is quite a controversial book which deals with a difficult subject - teenage sex - and in the wrong hands could have been awkward and moralising. However the author Judy Waite handles the topic brilliantly - some scenes in particular are just so well handled - Game Girls definately earns the five stars.
