Product Description

Product Description
As experienced teachers of novice game designers, the authors have discovered patterns in the way that students grasp game design the mistakes they make as well as the methods to help them to create better games.

Each exercise requires no background in programming or artwork, releasing beginning designers from the intricacies of electronic game production and allowing them to learn what works and what doesn't work in a game system. Additionally, these exercises teach important skills in system design: the processes of prototyping, playtesting, and redesigning.

Teaches the fundamentals of game design through the study of classic systems

Exercises will strengthen your understanding of how game elements work together

About the Author
Co-founders of Spiderdance, Inc., the authors have designed over 150 games and interactive products. As faculty members at the USC School of Cinema-Television, the authors have taught hands-on workshops in game design for seven years..

4.0 out of 5 stars This book is about game DESIGN, 26 May 2008
The reviewer before me seems to have bought the wrong book and for that I'm sorry, I hate when I do that, but for the same reason I have to write something about this item. This book is not about implementation of video games. It's about game design and does a fairly good job of it, too! No, it does not contain any UML diagrams or source code - but I wouldn't say that is a bad thing, because of the book's scope.

Working as an educator within the software business and spending a lot of time talking about design of games with people taking courses in game development, this book actually delivers some insights of what is hard with developing games - to deliver a good, solid and FUN design. I especially like the chapter about playtesting!

It's worth a read - if you want to improve your game design and not learn how to write source code for platform X! Maybe someone should place the book in some other category so that people won't buy the wrong book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fundamentally valuable..., 14 Jul 2008

Epic. Hits hard at the foundations of game design which many 'designers' seem to miss entirely! The fundamentals of fun/rules/boundaries ... the essence of games, and how crucial playground antics are to visualising innovative products.
Brilliant.

1.0 out of 5 stars rubbish, 13 Mar 2008

1- This book is too, too, too, too theoretical
2- Doesn't address any real design issues such as the design document
3- It talks too much about individuals for example the life stories of game developers/designers etc. and believe me at least one third of the book is stories.
4- This book is basically an insult to the reader's intelligence. to the extend it tells you how to apply for jobs in the game development market. Do you need to buy a book for this?
5- The authors might be good programmers/designers or what ever you wish to call them but certainly they are not good writers.
6- is game design about designing the game software? or just the artistic graphical side of it. You ask yourself this question and tell me how far can you separate design from programming? a designer must be a programmer, when a programmer reach the level of design then you can call him a top, first class programmer. Someone who doesn't know how the software system work and how it is being developed certainly can not design it.
7- The book has photos of vedio games and a playstion controlers, after you buy ops" it does not mean video games in particular but games in general"
8- This book is not relate to game design from a software point of view but it is about games as the term game means( a game could be a board game or any game that you don't play on computers)
9- This book shouldn't be placed with computer related books, because it does not relate to them
