VSO The Gambia brings experienced volunteer professional advisors to work in The Gambia alongside Gambian educationalists, health professionals, legal and social welfare advisors, usually for two year contracts. We recommend that all our newly arriving volunteers use The Gambia Bradt Guide as it is simply the most up to date, accurate and user friendly guide to the country and shows how to survive here on all budget levels. It's well written, incisive - and pretty funny too. Unlike some guidebooks I have read it accurately describes the country I live in, and does not present an idealised version of what tourists want to read.

It is more than just another guidebook. Craig and Linda are well known in The Gambia as the country's leading ecologists - they write regular newspaper columns, are closely involved with government wildlife initiatives and they have recently formed their own conservation project, The Makasutu Wildlife Trust. They don't ram wildlife down your throat - it's perfectly possible to use this book and have some great meals and days out and to never take notice of any flora or fauna - but for those who want to see more, they open up possibilities for observing The Gambia's renowned, burgeoning, but increasingly endangered wildlife, sometimes in the most unexpected places.

I bought this along with 2 other guides prior to my first visit to Gambia. Although the least recent in terms of publication date it did seem to be the most up to date in terms of restaurants that were still open etc., and I found it far and away the most practical and appropriate of guides for me as a first time visitor who was simply a package tourist with an independent streak as opposed to someone on a gap year backpack visit.
That said as it is written by authors who live in the country it is also an excellent guide for the medium to long-stay visitor also.
Highly recommended!

A useful little book, bought hastily days before a first ever trip to the Gambia. A good introduction with Handy tips on how to understand the locals (culture very different in tourist areas than outside). Could have done with a few sketched maps perhaps. Updating is needed already but this doesn't to affect the usefulness of the book.
Read fully before leaving if possible! (I found out some places too late!) If you plan to explore a particular area, this book will get you there with a few ideas but i'd suggest you get a more detailed guide for your own needs.
