Product Description

Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785) was a highly successful composer of operas (he wrote 109 operas...) and instrumental music, working and composing at the courts of London and St Petersburg, before settling in his hometown Venice. His aesthetic credo was: beauty, clearness and good modulation. His music is easy to follow, graceful and pleasing to the ear and heart. This set offers the complete harpsichord concertos, small-scale works, full of brilliant virtuosity and wit. Excellently played by Roberto Loreggian and his group. Loreggian is universally praised for his great achievements for the Frescobaldi Edition.

Peiretti's edition of Galuppi's harpsichord concertos (which is a masterly recording, also available on Amazon) have been around for a while, but at a high price, so how do Loreggian's fair? As a master player of Frescobaldi and acclaimed keyboardist, my expectations of his playing were high; and indeed, this music requires some subtlety of playing. Basically, these performances are very good and inject fresh life into these obscure works. But, there are a few niggles.

Now, whilst the harpsichord playing here is vital, it is very different from Peiretti's; it is more masculine and somewhat insistent. I think Galuppi's music can benefit from a somewhat meditative approach but the Ensemble Conserto Musico have taken an antipodean approach and if Galuppi himself had been the one to play the keyboard on his original compositions, it might bear some resemblance to this present recording. But there is also a roughness and sprightliness to this performance which is somewhat of a double edged sword. Whilst preserving the vital and melodic aspects, maybe some of the more subtle poetry of Galuppi's music is lost to a full-blooded performance. Having said that, the best of the concertos (in C minor) do not come off worse for this approach; but some of the more gentle passages may have benefited from a more nuanced angle.

For the price, this set offers excellent value for money and also includes a couple of flute concertos to boot, but overall I am slightly less convinced by this set compared to Peiretti's. It is a strong, modern performance with the harpsichord at the forefront. If it is not perfect, it is indeed spirited! Compelling at any rate and recommended.

Well played - and a good price for one of the great forgotten composers. Halfway between Vivaldi and Mozart.

Peiretti v Loreggian 4 May 2012

A fine recording not to be ignored. 19 April 2015

The disparity between the two existing reviews compels me to add my perspective. The disparaging remarks of the one reviewer seem entirely unwarranted to me. I'm not sure what they were expecting. It is not particularly helpful when no explanation is offered. This is my first exposure to Galuppi and I am very pleased. I find his compositions to be more imaginative than many baroque composers. I am not familiar with the Peiretti recording the other reviewer mentions, but I find this a compelling and very well recorded performance. And a bargain compared to the Peiretti recording, as an MP3 at least.

One point of clarification. Mr. Birkhead's revue describes this as a "strong, modern performance." I'm not sure if this is in reference to the style of performance, but you should know that it is performed on original or reproduction period instruments. At least according to other reviews on the web. Hope this helps.

All I have to say is that the music on this CD is simply terrible! What a waste of money!
