Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
My son (just turned six) is a big fan of the smaller mosaic kits so I thought he'd like these. We sat down one wet Saturday to do one each and, while we did enjoy ourselves for a bit, we soon broke off from what we were doing and went to do something else. I think the problem is that they're just too big and, not only that, they have too many big patches of the same colour. This, I think, makes it less rewarding. You can spend ten minutes on the body of a big green alien and still have more than half of it to go, for example.

Now, some of the patterns are more interesting than the others (I think the big green alien is the least interesting, actually, but I'm sure my taking it counts as some sort of noble sacrifice) and there are fiddly bits on all of them that are quite satisfying so it's not all bad news. You can of course split them across several sittings as well, though we've not yet revisited the ones we started.

And the funny thing is, my little man's done several smaller ones since. Maybe it's an attention span thing, although for his age I think he's got quite a good one. Also, one thing I noticed about these big ones is that the pictures are already coloured. Some of the smaller ones (might be by a different manufacturer, I don't know) are just black and white, so it's not until you've put the tiles on the board that you start to see the colour image emerging. Maybe the approach on these ones kills the suspense a bit, who knows...

Anyway, that's about it from me. These are not bad, but we prefer the smaller ones in my house. They are a great source of sticky foam tiles though (hundreds and hundreds of them) and these could always be put to other uses but that's not enough to earn this set a recommendation from me.

My daughter (9) had some fun with this activity on a wet half-term day. However, the attraction wore off quite quickly after a couple of pictures.

On the plus side, it is very easy to do - the pictures are covered in little numbered/colour coded squares, so you just stick the appropriate coloured "tile" on each square. The tiles are foam, self-adhesive and come on a rectangular sheet - you just peel off and stick down. The only limitation is dexterity (actually my fat fingers were useless for getting the tile exactly on the square!).

The end result is not bad - my daughter was quite pleased and happily gave away completed pictures as presents for her nana, teacher, etc. However, personally I would have liked the end result to look more like a proper mosaic - the end result leaves lots of gaps between tiles and some parts (like eyes) are just pre-printed and never tiled at all. I think it would be even better if the end result was entirely solid with tiles, so you could not see that there had been a template underneath at all.

However, you get absolutely masses of tiles, so if you got bored with the pre-made pictures you could have a go at doing your own "free hand".

I think this would be absolutely ideal as a 'party gift' - a reasonable amount of play value, good for boys or girls, and well-priced.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This art and craft set consists of 12 pictures and sheets of small, foam tiles, which can be peeled and stuck onto the colour coded pictures. In a sense, it is a kind of painting by numbers, without the paint. There are twelve pictures: a butterfly, a lion, hot air balloons, a rocket, a tortoise, an octopus, a robot, a pirate ship, a monkey, a dog, an alien and an owl. Many pictures are boy oriented, although enough are neutral for the set to appeal to girls too. The colours used are brown, orange, yellow, green, blue, red and purple – so, again, quite neutral.

The tiles are quite small and fiddly, with a recommended age of 5+. My daughter and niece both enjoyed playing with the set and making the pictures. They are easy to make and my little niece wanted to take hers home to put in her room. On the plus side, there is no mess (apart from little squares of discarded paper) and the set is easy and fun to use. It does become a bit repetitive, but can be packed away nicely in the box, so your child can do the pictures one at a time. A nice activity for a rainy day.

Both my kids (aged 7 and 8) like to play with these mosaic pictures, as they're simple and easy to pick up. You have to stick the sticky square pieces of colour in the correct places, which are all numbered. A key is given, telling you which colour is which number, but I prefer to write the number on the back of the sheet of sticky pieces so that my kids can easily tell which colour is needed.

My daughter played with a set of these mosaics before and I ended up with a carpet covered in little white squares of backing paper, This time, I found that the coloured pieces were cut better in that not all the cuts went through to the backing sheet. However, to prevent a repeat of the mess from last time I stuck sellotape over all the backing sheets of the coloured pieces, which worked a treat but took me half an hour.

The mosaics set is placed on a side table in our dining room, so the kids can just take a picture to complete as and when they want to. It's a nice easy project to dip into, just perfect for the holidays.
