Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This mirror is very cheery, with a nice scrunchy sun and butterfly. The velcro mounting flap holds it very sturdily to a cot, and the string ties prevent any sliding.

Sadly, this is where the positives stop. My 6-month-old noticed its arrival on his cot, but hasn't shown much interest in it yet. The main selling point of this unit is, of course, its mirror. Unfortunately, this is not of the high quality I normally associate with Galt Toys. Presumably motivated by health and safety concerns (real or imagined), glass has been shunned in favour of a flexible metallised plastic surface. This undulates so much that the reflections look like something from a fairground comedy mirror. It makes me feel queasy to look at; I can't imagine what ideas it gives a baby about the nature of his own visage. The mirror surface also picks up permanent scratches and scuffs with even the lightest contact with other objects.

The mirror comes with a booklet by a Dr Miriam (whoever she may be), encouraging you to talk to your baby (like I'd never thought of that before). It manages to be both patronising and pretentious at the same time.

Overall: disappointing.

Although I imagine that this mirror is intended for babies, to encourage tummy time, I have been using it with my two-year-old daughter to explore facial expressions and generally be a bit silly. She’s been really enjoying pulling faces or using it to peer at things behind her!

It’s durable and of good quality and finish. I’d be very happy to but this as a present for a smaller baby as it’s safe but also great value for money!

I read in the New Scientist that a baby would prefer to look at a face more than any other thing, so I tried attaching this to the overhead bar on my 3-4 month old son's bouncy chair, play gym and car seat. It worked - all of these places now hold his interest for longer.

This is a well designed item, with a large velcro flap on the back that allows you to attach it to any bar like object without it sliding about unduly.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Developed by Dr Miriam Stoppard, the UK parenting expert, the Galt Smiley Sun Mirror is a great way to teach your baby the concept of self, and is easily attached to a cot, or can be placed on the floor. The strange, but wonderful thing about this, is that it can also be put into the washing machine to clean, despite the 'mirror', which is a plastic baby mirror and very safe.

The whole product is very bright and has lots of touchy, feely, materials and textures and a crinkly paper sound, too. It is smaller than I expected, but for a young baby just grasping and reaching out, that is probably a good thing it's small and light to explore. Also comes with tips (for the parents!) on how to play with this toy to get the most out of it.

This is a 'toy' that is not going to get immediate 'results', as such, but studies do show looking at oneself in the mirror from an early age, does aid development and self-awareness, which can only be a good thing in the long run.

What do you get the baby that has everything, or more likely, the baby who does not know that it wants anything yet? A simple toy that allows them to explore is a great start, be it through sight or sound. There is a reason that many baby toys are very colourful and full of crinkly sound making elements – it helps the baby to develop and draw their attention. This is the theory anyway and one that Dr Miriam Galt sticks to with her range of development toys that include the ‘Dr Miriam Galt Smiley Sun Mirror’.

Does the ‘Smiley Sun Mirror’ stand out over other toys you can get for a similar price? Not overly, but it is a good toy. You are able to place it on the floor, or hang it off the side of a cot. Either way it will be in reachable distance once a child learns to start grabbing at things; thankfully they will have loads of cool bits of soft and crinkling things to touch. The entire thing is also meant to be washable, which will come in handy around any small child. The one major misgiving I have is that the mirror itself is a distorted type of plastic. This makes sense as it is far safer, but the reflection can be a little freaky at times; slightly more hall or mirrors than anything else. I would hope that Dr Galt knows what she is doing here and that there would be no permanent mental scarring from seeing yourself as a long faced baby.

I'd like to thank the youthful looking Dr Miriam for providing instructions on how to play with this toy, however my 5 month old goddaughter preferred her own method of play which was to suck the sun, ribbons/rainbow and cloud like edges, completely ignoring the beautiful low-tech squeaker or the remonstrations of her mother to "look how the sun shines.....". I can report that the mirror held its own and cleaned up very well following this slobbering onslaught and the toy was well received.

This mirror combines two baby favourites - a mirror and 'taggie' style ribbons. It's soft and safe and attaches easily to our cot.

My only issue is the mirror is a little smaller than I would have liked.

I must just say....I'm a little sceptical about the 'part of a range of baby toys developed with Dr Miriam Stoppard' claim. My eldest played with an almost identical mirror at the toddler group we used to go to. Perhaps more of a case of 're-packaged for Dr Miriam Stoppard'.
