This is the fourth episode of the second series of the Gallifrey stories, set in the Doctor Who universe but featuring a Gallifreyan setting. In this story, which follows closely from the episodes 1 through 3, Gallifrey is now hosting off-world students at the Academy, but many timelords are not happy. One who is most definitely not happy is Inquisitor Darkel who is seeking opportunities to challenge President Romana for her position. And Darkel is not too scrupulous about how she goes about it. Romana is still largely cut off from the Matrix because of the Pandora issue, and when she needs to rely on Leela for support, Leela’s own problems threaten to overwhelm her. And Romana is without her chief support of Braxiatel.

This is not a story to jump on to the Gallifrey series with; you really need to have listened through the earlier series 1, and the earlier stories in series 2 to get to this point. But the tension is ramping up nicely in this second series, and I look forward to the next stories in the ongoing Gallifrey saga.

As always, Lalla Ward is great as the imperious Timelord President, and Louise Jameson is fantastic as Leela, as always somewhat out of her comfort zone on Gallifrey and with people who don’t speak their mind. The mix of characters portraying the offworld students is great; the Earth student sounds remarkably like the voice of David Tennant, but it is in fact Gary Bakewell. Narvin and Andred have their own roles to play in this story as well, and the story overall fits well within the Gallifreyan saga. I’m really enjoying listening to these stories, and look forward immensely to the next episode.
