Leaving it all behind 10 July 2003
Format:Paperback
The perfect antidote to having-it-all chick-lit, Barfoot tackles the issue of a womans unhappiness in the traditional wife/mother role. Abra makes the taboo decision to leave her husband and two young children to emerse herself in a life of self sufficiency and solitude, abandoning not just her family but the luxuries of modern life.
This book will make you think about the life you want to lead and how that fits with peoples expectations of you, I'm not saying it will change your life but it might help you think outside the square!
A must for fans of feminist fiction this would also appeal to people who enjoyed the film The Hours.

The central character, Abra, leaves her husband and children to 'find herself' before 'finding yourself' became a cliche. The nurturing of the self being a natural development of self sufficiency and the pull of relationships make this a seminal work of feminist fiction. Barefoot's skill lies in her ability to make us care for her characters despite their actions and to realise that there is no easy way of life, there is just life.
