Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Gaggia is the best known Italian manufacturer of coffee machines for professional and household use and its name is synonymous with tradition and reliability the world over. The company was set up in 1947 by Achille Gaggia, the man to whom we are indebted for the success of espresso coffee all over the world. It was he who on September 5th 1938 filed a patent no 365726 with which modern steam-free coffee machines may be said to have been born. In 1977 Gaggia began producing coffee machines for the home, launching the Baby Gaggia, which to this day is considered to be the ideal family coffee maker. The designs and technological advances have changed the way the machines look and work but the objective of quality, reliability and the passion for the right espresso everytime has remained throughout Gaggia's history and this is what makes Gaggia legendary.

Special care is given to its design with clean and definite lines, durable materials and exclusive finish. A user friendly design with front water reservoir that is removeable sideways, a large space to accommodate the cups, a stainless steel grill and the easy and exclusive controls makes the Evolution the choice of style and tradition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Look out Starbucks!!, 30 Dec 2005
I have had this machine for over a month now and I have used it every day. It makes beautiful coffee, looks fantastic and is extremely well made. If you grind your own beans, the coffee produced tastes like heaven and has a thick crema, but using pre-ground Illy is almost as good. The machine heats up in about 1 minute and can be left on all day without a glitch. I did loads of research before buying this and it has paid off.

4.0 out of 5 stars well worth the effort, 24 Oct 2006

I like coffee and I like gadgets. So an espresso machine is the perfect gift for a guy like me - so I got myself one! Actually I got it less than half price off the Gaggia web site as a recon model. I have had it 7 months now. I make several cups a day. If you use decent coffee the results are fantastic. It did once stop working. I feared the worse. In fact all it needed was a descale. I live in a very hard water area - so it's due for another descale I think. Takes about 30 mins to do this so no great deal. This chrome one is definitely worth the extra if you care about that sort of thing.

So it looks the business and it does the business for a reasonable cost. I think it will last and the guys at Gaggia are enthusiasts. Recommended.

Update: August 2009. This machine is still working well and is now an established part of my life. It makes great coffee, and I love it. Some might think it's a bit of an effort to use, but I actually quite like the ritual! Good idea to keep on top of the descaling routine, but I found out that you don't have to use the gaggia product for that.

If you like expresso or cappuccino and are debating whether an expresso machine is worth it, hesitate no longer - it certainly is when it works as well as this.

Probably make your self get some decaffinated coffee though - or end up totally wired when you over indulge!

5.0 out of 5 stars The ideal machine for a beginner!, 25 Oct 2009

I bought the Evolution second hand for a good price after reading excellent reviews on Amazon and CoffeeGeek. I enjoy my coffee, but until now have managed on stove-top espresso at home and shop bought takeaways while at work. I had initially wanted a Gaggia Classic or a Baby, but they were selling on Amazon and a well-known auction site for slightly more than I wanted to spend.

I gave it a really good clean as per the instructions and started brewing my first coffees today; the first one was a dishwater disaster (my fault- due to not compacting the coffee enough it seems- must get a tamper) but the subsequent ones have been great. From the second attempt onwards it has proved really simple to produce delicious coffee with a lovely crema and the milk frother produces a great head of foam with basically no effort. I found the instructions to be very easy to understand. As recommended by others I'm using pre-ground Illy but no doubt I'll eventually buy a burr coffee grinder.

The machine heats up very quickly, isn't too noisy and is compact enough to slot in well on a work-top. The slide out water tank is fine and the casing, although plastic, just wipes clean. The one cautionary note so far is that the buttons seems a little flimsy so I'm treating them gently. My old stove-top pot is now consigned to the back of the cupboard!

In conclusion, a great buy and great confidence-giver.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Coffee, not like other machines!!!
I was a bit apprehensive in buying a coffee machine as they are never as good as in Starbuck's, but this is brilliant, dead easy and makes beautiful coffee. Five Stars!
