Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Gaggia is the best known Italian manufacturer of coffee machines for professional and household use and its name is synonymous with tradition and reliability the world over. The company was set up in 1947 by Achille Gaggia, the man to whom we are indebted for the success of espresso coffee all over the world. It was he who on September 5th 1938 filed a patent no 365726 with which modern steam-free coffee machines may be said to have been born. In 1977 Gaggia began producing coffee machines for the home, launching the Baby Gaggia, which to this day is considered to be the ideal family coffee maker. The designs and technological advances have changed the way the machines look and work but the objective of quality, reliability and the passion for the right espresso everytime has remained throughout Gaggia's history and this is what makes Gaggia legendary.

The gaggia baby dose is a member of the Baby family of quality espresso machines for the home. The baby dose is equipped with an advanced innovative dosing system letting you set the exact amount of coffee in the cup. All you have to do is press the coffee button and your Baby dose will memorize the dose you like. The machine is equipped with a steam wand in order to froth your own milk for cappuccinos and lattes using the special milk steamer/frother. The Baby dose takes ground coffee or pods.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent espresso machine, 4 Feb 2009
By B. Dollery (London) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I bought one of these a year ago, and it's one of my prize possessions. I manage to get a great shot, most of the time, and regularly get a GodShot.

The 'dose' feature goes against everything I've learnt about making good espresso, and is effectively useless. This doesn't detract from the quality of the machine itself, or the quality of the results you can get with it. I simply never use the dose feature, preferring instead to use the go/stop button on the front of the machine.

Let me explain the problem with 'dose'. The length of the pull should usually be between 25 and 35 seconds. This is dependant on the type of coffee, its grind, the tamp, the machine's heating cycle, and the weather. If any of these change, the length of the pull will change. The 'dose' system allows you to program in the pull time. To make this useful, you'd have to reprogram it whenever one of these variables changes (which, in practice, is very frequently).

So, apart from having a useless extra feature, this machine is excellent, and I would recommend it to people who want to make good espresso.

When I bought my machine, the red one, I was given a chrome milk wand as a free gift, and I also bought the Gaggia grinder (which is messy, pooorly designed, and irritating, but produces a good grind), and a moulded base with knock-draw. It sits in my kitchen drawing lots of attention from visitors, all of whom immediately ask for a coffee, and without exception then ask me to show them how to make their own.

If you want a quick coffee in the mornings without much hassle or mess then this isn't the device for you. Go and buy a pod machine -- they make something similar to coffee with very little hassle.

But, if you like coffee; if you buy your beans freshly roasted from a specialist importer (HasBean is my favourite), have a good grinder, and are willing to take a little time making your coffee, then this machine is a good choice at a reasonable price.
