4.0 out of 5 stars Good Coffee - shame about reliability, 5 Dec 2008
This review is from: Gaggia Baby Dose 74825 Coffee Maker Silver (Kitchen & Home)
This is an easy machine to use and makes good coffee at a reasonable price. The key to getting a good coffee with this machine is to find a fine ground coffee. Most pre-ground coffee from the local supermarkets is just too course (even those that state for expresso machine) Illy works well giving a good flow rate and taste. I've now bought a Dualit grinder allowing me to use a range of different beans, giving the fine grind the Baby Dose needs. The milk frother is excellent.

Only down side has been the reliability. I'm now on my third Baby Dose this year, with faults inculding faulty pump and leaking water around the coffee filter holder when pumping water.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gaggia Baby Dose - it is multo bella!, 15 Dec 2009

This coffee coffee machine is one of a number available on the market that Gaggia produce for home and is near the top end in terms of price. The next price level up buys you a machine that can grind the beans for you, but more about that in a minute. Out of the box, the plastic casing looks quite smart, though being made of what it is made of, over time, it will deteriorate and start to discolour, so not as nice to look at. The coffee that the machine produces is of a good quality and compares favourably with the high-street coffee retailers version of the latte, espresso and cappuchino. I live in a hard water area and it does require regular de-scaling, but then so does my kettle.

There are a few minor gripes: the machine is noisy in operation making a right old clatter whilst sitting on your work top and it does take time for the frother to bring the milk to the boil; though when it does, the milk comes out lovely and thick and frothy. The dosing element of this machine seems like a good idea, though not having owned a machine where you have to guess the dose of coffee you want to put in your cup, I'm not sure how much of a boon it really is....

The machine is easy to keep clean. I haven't tried using pods to make my coffee, but stick to illy beans and a good old fashioned grinder set to 'fine' and you won't go far wrong. I haven't experienced any issues with reliability and I've owned mine now for 16 months.

    Overall, well recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good coffee and frother let down by poor plastic, 17 Aug 2008

This is a good "cheap" machine which makes good coffee and froths the milk nicely. However, you really need to follow the instructions very carefully in order to achieve this.

Unfortunately, being an Italian machine, the English instructions are a little difficult to follow and needs reading a couple of times.

The main gripe about this machine is the cheap plastic casing which unfortunately came with a tiny crack in the one I bought. This was probably a manufacturing fault but I returned it to Whittards where I bought it from in exchange for the Baby Twin which is an all metal contruction.
