Beseeched by Antony, her head of chambers to calm down a distraught woman in his office Barrister Trish Maguire finds herself caught up in the troubles of biographer Beatrice Bowan who is being sued by Lord Simon Tick over a name appearing in a book she has written about Jeremy Martin, who was responsible for a bombing thirty years ago.

Never one for quiet life she also finds herself seeking information that may help her old friend Inspector Caro Lyalt who is after a fantastic new job, but suspects that her greatest rival is involved with a South London crime family, who have a very nasty way of dealing with treachery. When the PC who had first brought Caro's attention to the possible corruption is killed, Trish is caught up in a web of deceit. In her pursuit for the truth Trish inadvertently places her brother David and her

relationship with George her partner in great danger.

There is so much more in this book than two mysteries - there are several moral dilemma's the value of integrity, the safety of those we love, how to live with guilt if we do nothing - how to balance the safety of those we love with doing what we know is right, whilst ensuing their safety and our own integrity. It's a tall order but Natasha Cooper takes the reader through the depths of these emotions and finds solutions to what look like insoluble problems. This is her best book yet.

Natasha Cooper's talent for drawing characters is obvious in this, the author's 7th Trish Maguire novel, as is her skill in weaving disparate elements into a seriously good piece of writing and a gritty riveting tale of almost gothic secrets and their consequences. Trish is both intelligent and confident - but sometimes in her zeal to help her friends and do what is right, she gets mired in situations that not only interfere with her job as a barrister but also can lead her into danger. In this case she not only puts herself and her brother David in jeopardy, but also her relationship with her life partner George, a circumstance that should be unthinkable. Natasha never disappoints and this is no exception. Highly recommended.
