On April 12 1961, Soviet fighter pilot and cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin blasted off into space not knowing what fate awaited him. He was one of the legendary top twenty men selected for a mission wrought with danger and whose bravery knew no bounds in his quest to become the first man in space. Gagarin tells the story of one of modern history s greatest pioneers, and of the Russian space team whose untiring efforts and determination led to the conquering of the unknown.

I have always been fascinated with space and astronomy ever since I was a kid - who hasn't dreamt of being an astronaut?! So when I heard about this new film, based on the first person ever in space, I had to check it out! And it was great!

A must for anyone into astronomy or space, the film takes a look at the dangerous mission into the unknown and the build up and problems that were faced throughout. Some stunning moments that really stand out - it's easily one of the best movies I've seen about Space Exploration and is well worth taking a look at.

Perfect for fans of sci-fi and those with a love for the stars. Check it out!

Having first visited Moscow in 1973 and being blown away by the amazing Monument to Space - a silver rocket shooting up into the sky, I went back 30 years later and visited the space museum - So overawed how small the Gagarin capsule was, and when I drove past the Gagarin statue sometime later - was intrigued to find out more. Forgot all about it until I watched this - what a treat, and no hype - a great story well told

I have read a number of English language works on the Soviet & Russian space programs, rocketry and associated topics; primarily the 4-volume set of Boris Chertok's, amongst others, so believe I am reasonably versed in the subject to comment. This film is an emotional review of Garagin's first space flight, interspersed with flash-backs of his younger life in the Soviet Union, so has not much technical detail and some minor technical inaccuracies. (The separation of the instrument and retro-rock from the capsule, the provision of the code to access the manual controls, the faulty hatch switch, amongst others.) Animal lovers will enjoy cameos of Belka and Streka. The CGI is excellent, the locations too. The suits look amateurish, but having reviewed copies of the photos of the space suits they were just that - very primitive (as they were the first!). Because the film is more an emotional dramatisation, then these inaccuracies I can forgive, as it is not a documentary (see the excellent "Cosmonauts: How Russia Won the Space Race" BBC). I loved this film and have seen it at least 4 times! (I originally saw the original Russian-language only version.) I can heartily recommend it with those minor reservations as a long-overdue work that should have it's place in history, to record this original and historic flight. Because of the greater focus on the humanity of the endeavour, this should make it much more accessible to a wider audience of not just space-buffs like myself: my wife has happily watched it twice! My only real regret is that this sub-titled version has not been placed on major release and shown in cinemas world-wide, as it deserves, to publicise it to wider audience.

This account of the life of Yuri Gagarin is a fine portrayal of his life and closely accords with (possibly draws on) the biography entitled 'Starman' written by Jamie Doran and Piers Bizony. When I was a boy, Gagarin was my first hero before the achievements of the American Apollo space programme captivated my attention. I appreciated this depiction; the acting and direction are first class and I found that the Russian dialogue coupled with subtitling added to a feeling of authenticity. If anyone is interested in the life and times of the first man to venture into space then I would recommend this DVD.

A compelling biopic into the events leading up to Yuri Gagarin's historic mission into space in 1961. It shows the early life of Gagarin under the Nazis, his humble background, his fight to be accepted into the Russian air force and his eventual selection for the Soviet space programme. The choice of Yaroslav Zhalnin as the young leading actor is inspired because of his uncanny likeness to Gagarin who was known for his enigmatic smile. It also gives a fresh insight into the so-called 'space race' with the United States from the Soviet perspective. A very watchable movie with some great space moments showing just how precarious space travel was in those early days - Vostok 1 was nothing more than a ballistic missile with a command module added! The movie runs for 108 minutes (the same time to the minute that Gagarin orbited in space). It's also the first full movie to sanctioned by Gagarin's family after his death in 1968 aged just 34 after a tragic plane accident. If ever there was a 'Hero of the Soviet Union' it's this guy! He remains one of the most important icons of the 20th century. Don't be put off by the movie subtitles, it's worth the effort.

Well made movie. Special effects of the Vostok in orbit very nice and give the realism of the operations made by Gagarin in the capsule. Also the reconstruction of the Vostok is very realistic
Storyline well cared and fitted with the life of Yuri.

An excellent drama based on the first Soviet manned flight. Gave a very personal view of the cosmonauts and of the Soviet scientists and the primitive conditions of the space capsules and rockets.
