1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs 30 May 2005
Beware Gaelic learners! This is the worst Gaelic dictionary on the market and should be avoided at all cost. It is very outdated and in part dates back to the mid 19th century. The English-Gaelic side contains a variety of obscure and outdated English words and the Gaelic-English sides often explains what words mean rather than giving their direct Gaelic equivalent. Save your money and buy a better Gaelic dictionary such as Mark's Gaelic dictionary or Watson's Gaelic dictionary. It is depressing that publishers are still bringing out such an outdated and confusing publication.

1.0 out of 5 stars Caveat emptor 22 July 2005
By A
Whatever it may say in the blurbs on the back cover, this is not a helpful dictionary. Avoid in particular the English-Gaelic section, which will lead the unwary learner astray. There are much better and more up-to-date dictionaries on the market, such as the new Teach Yourself one and the much under-rated but very helpful little white dictionary by Renton & MacDonald. MacLennan's dictionary is a waste of money and best avoided.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gaelic Dictionary 28 Dec 2010
A must for anyone learning Gaelic,I am forever picking it up to check how to pronounce a word or to find out the meaning in English. Very useful and would not be without it now.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a good buy unless you want a doorstop 18 Sep 2011
Another reincarnation of MacLennan's 1925 (!!!) dictionary...

As with the other (the purple one) at first sight this, as the others, appeal because they are both English-Gaelic and Gaelic-English but it is unreliable and outdated to the extreme. The meanings are often wrong, the spelling strange by most people's standards and the pronunciation guide only helpful if you know how to pronounce the word already anyway. And if etymology appeals, then just buy MacBain or some such.
