France released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: French ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Italian ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), French ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.78:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Filmographies, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: In this comedy-drama, Stephane (Romain Duris), a young man from France, travels to Romania on a mission; his father has recently passed away, and since the old man's favorite singer was an unrecorded gypsy vocalist from Romania, he has come to track her down and put her music on tape. However, he's not sure where she is, and as he wanders though a village in battered shoes on a cold night, an older gentleman of gypsy blood, Izidor (Isidor Serban) allows him to spend the night in his home after regaling him with drunken rants about his dire fate. While gypsies take a dim view of strangers, Stephane goes out of his way to ingratiate himself into their community, and as the locals develop a grudging trust for him, Stephane meets Sabina (Rona Hartner), a beautiful gypsy dancer whose allure is matched by her fiery personality and blunt vocabulary. Izador is Sabina's accompanying musician, and as Stephane is drawn into Sabina's web by the passion of both her dancing and her lovemaking, he also becomes friends with the older man and struggles to better understand his way of life. Director Tony Gatlif, himself of gypsy heritage, previously directed a documentary about gypsy musicians, Latcho Drom. ...Gadjo dilo (1997) ( L'étranger fou ) ( The Crazy Stranger )

5.0 out of 5 stars Trying to find this film 6 Jun 2010
Since seeing this film years ago, in the cinema, it's haunting earthiness and great soundtrack have stayed with me. Sometimes the memory of a film is better than a re watching, but not in this case. Young Parisian goes in search of his bereaved father's favourite gypsy singer. Taken in by a Romanian gypsy family , he experiences the joys, tribulations and day to day casual discrimination that these communities go through.
Great spirit, great musical soundtrack and earthy acting. Great to see it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars touching and vivid 5 Mar 2014

I loved Gadjo Dilo when it was released, and seeing it again now I still found it a charming film, both as a portrait of the Roma people and a story of one young man's journey of discovery. The music is absolutely superb, and their dancing full of spirit. Romain Duris has a winning smile and very open attitude to the unknown, and the characters he meets are feisty and disarming by turns - however I don't think I could have 'roughed it' quite like Duris does, with such good grace. The lifestyle he adopts, for a time, seems less exotic 17 years on, and more like an ordeal, including the absolute impossibility of getting even the simplest point communicated, even though there was certainly a high enough decibel level! As I say, it is really the music and singing which makes it, and Rona Hartner is full of gypsy fire and intrigue as the Romantic interest, with the added originality that the character is not above a bit of biting if things don't go her way ... the dirty talk that seems to come so naturally to her is also quite funny! The fairly elderly Izidor, who takes in Duris with much kindness a bit like a long-lost son, cannot fail to leave a mark on the viewer.

5.0 out of 5 stars great film 27 Dec 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I like this film as l think it is quite an accurate portrayal of some Roma , it has beautiful and amusing scenes in it, also tragedy, try watching it without sub-titles and you'll empathise better with the problem of language. The music is great, and it's worth watching the film just for that.

A great movie I've first seen on tv and decided to get one immediately. Really fun without trying to be, touches to your heart without trying to do so.
