Book Description

Nicolas Freeling, a master of crime writing, is teamed here with a distinguished American physicist in this factual account of an unspeakable event that could so easily happen. Applying his engrossing insights into psychological observation, Freeling presents a chilling portrayal of the nuclear age which will leave you free from many a good night's sleep.

About the Author

Born in London in 1927, Nicolas Freeling is the author of over thirty titles, many of which are part of the crime genre. His education was broad and he attended a series of schools in England, Ireland and France. He served in the Royal Air Force, and from 1950 worked at various jobs in kitchens, hotels and restaurants throughout Europe. It was this intimate knowledge of the continent that influenced the style and settings of his subsequent books. The first of these was published in 1961. He is best known for the creation of Inspector Piet Van der Valk, an irascible detective engaged in ordinary crime, political intrigue and international affairs. Freeling is married, has four sons and one daughter and currently resides in France.

The title of this review says it all. While not the first novel on nuclear terror ever written, nor the last, it is the best. It is technically accurate (up to a necessary point, of course); the plot is plausible; and the conclusion is terrifying.

Some may quibble that the bomb design and construction team is too small -- only a scientist and a technician -- but that is exactly the size the American Office of Technology Assessment set as the minimum in its 1977 report on nuclear terror. Freeling's anonymous scientific collaborator obviously knew his stuff.

If you can find a copy of "Gadget", you should buy it.

Gadget is so convincing as to be scary. 11 April 2005
By L. E. Palmer - Published on Amazon.com
"Gadget" was a nickname applied to the first atomic device detonated at the Trinity site in 1945, and it's a very appropriate title for Freeling's book. In a book much shorter than many similar techno-thrillers, Freeling presents a credible scenario for assembling a terrorist team, and building and detonating an improvised nuclear device. There's sufficient technical jargon and references to support the human side of the plot, and further enhance the credibility of the scenario. In this book, the bad guys win.
