The Lucky Strikes - Gabriel, Forgive My 22 Sins (Stove Pony)
Southend based alt. country, blues, gospel band The Lucky Strikes play far from authentic Americana, but they do make a most agreeable noise. They do 'big' in much the same way as The Waterboys used to, but with a side helping of Thames Delta pub rock urgency that strips away any residual showiness. Vocalist Matthew Boulter possesses a fantastic growl, and when the band hit their stride on songs like "The Boxer The Bribe And A Father" and "We Are Waves" they're as appealing as peak period Brinsley Schwarz. Well worth looking out for. 8/10.
