A thing of beauty, half the time 27 Dec 2009
By Matthew Watters - Published on Amazon.com
Ken Peplowski is a virtuoso on the clarinet but a rather derivative tenor sax player, and therein lies the problem with this album: it's half a great record. On the clarinet tracks, and especially on the tune "Minor Swing" (which adds a violin into the mix), this is a rare and ingenious recreation of small-group swing of the era before guitars were amplified. Guitarist Howard Alden, who did the music on Woody Allen's film Sweet and Lowdown about the 1930s' "second greatest" guitar player, really knows this music, and Peplowski's sound on the clarinet is a thing of beauty. But every time he picks up the tenor, I wish somebody would just take it away from him and lock it up in a cabinet somewhere. Peplowski's breathy sound on this particular axe, heavily indebted to Stan Getz, is so transparent and so un-swinging, I suddenly find myself on every one of these tunes just listening past him to the strum and chug of the two-guitar rhythm section, and my mind begins to wander. With Peplowski switching back and forth between horns on every track (--all the even numbered tunes are on clarinet, all the odd on tenor--), Gypsy Lamento makes for a listening experience that is alternatingly exhilirating and numbing.
