This should be studied by anyone who wants to learn about (illustrated) horror scripts. It's simply amazing how the guy manages to throw you into a story, that, if told in (any) other way you, you'd drop into the floor... laughing, I mean, come on... fish with legs ? what's creepy in that, you could say. However, the man rocks!, there are sequences of 3 pages, that shows nothing but a "shhhhhh", and something moving fast across a room, and it's done with tons of suspense. The art's beautifull, the plot is so absolutely deep, for a so simple idea that I must say that this guy was born to do this kind os stuff. If you're into horror/suspense objects of art, you better get this, if you're not, get it anyway, you won't be disapointed.

Gyo from the master of nasty horror manga, Junji Ito.

You might be familiar with Uzumaki. Gyo is equally twisted!! Follow Tadashi and Kaori as they try to get to the cause of the stench....of death! Filled with highly detailed grotesque artwork, you almost have to squint at its foulness...I mean creepy fish with legs? Even the sound effects of the fish creeping around are weird, gross and disturbing. Especially the gas..... You can almost smell it! A must for horror fans! Don't expect dense characterisation here, expect a high ick factor. You cannot beat a crazed scientists messing with germs and rotting fish......It really does creep you out.

Part of the Viz editors choice series.

4.0 out of 5 stars not uzumaki... but chilling never the less. 17 May 2004
i'll be honest. i love uzumaki, and believe if is one of the most chilling reads around. if you haven't read it, stop now and buy all 3.
however, if you've hungry for some more toe-curling horror, then Gyo will not disapoint.
you will reconise Ito's talent for warping the human body into something truely foul. and you will feel the atmosphere seeping from the pages of this book (1 of 2).
ito's style and art have evolved and improved, and the second book (which finishes the tale prefectly) continues to impress.
it is a good read, and has my reckonmendations.
however, it is not uzumaki, and still suffers from chronically underdeveloped characters. that may seem harsh, and i have nothing but respect for the author, but after the genuis of uzumaki (all right, all right, i'll shut up about uzumaki now), it did not meet the standard.
it would still make a welcome addition to any comic-fan's libary though, enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning horror 7 Nov 2003
By A Customer
Junji Ito is really at the peak of his powers in this astonishing book. Deeply disturbing... no surprise when stenchy fish with spider legs ruin your romantic weekend! As ever Junji Ito's graphic line is terrific and his stories original.
