Product Description

The C-2D microscope is ideal for those inspection tasks requiring plenty of room between the microscope and the object under observation. This microscope includes a set of remarkable objectives that give a 230mm working distance expandable to 250mm. 45deg inclined head. The image presented to the observer is clear, bright and sharp. For maximum comfort the interpupiliary distance is adjustable and the left eyepiece allows diopter adjustment of up to +/-5dp. In addition, the basic stand (included in the price) allows you to adjust not only the position but also the tilt angle of the head. This means that the widest number of people can use this microscope comfortably over prolonged viewing periods. The microscopes include a 12V 10W lamp built into the head. This microscope is compatible with GX Microscopes' illumination systems for those requiring the greatest flexibility in microscope positioning and object illumination. To record or display an image from this microscope GX Microscopes' digital eyepiece cameras can be easily attached. This microscope has been specifically designed for workplace environments such as electronics assembly, jewellery work, component checking and inspection and precious stone examination

As I get older my eyes are getting increasingly crappy for close up detail work. I've been doing a lot of electronics soldering recently, and I find that with my unaided eye, or even with reading glasses on, I can really no longer tell the difference between a good joint, or a bad one, or no joint at all!

I've tried that magnifying headgear thing, and loupes, and I just can't get much joy out of them.

The best tool I've found is a cheap low power (20x) microscope, unfortunately the working height and area with that is not great. I couldn't work on anything larger than a credit card there. So I've been eyeing larger inspection microscopes for a while. This one seems perfect because the magnification is not excessive - 10x (still at least twice the power of practical loupes and goggles etc), which means I have an excellent field of view and working height. Oh, and of course the price is good too (around £260 when I bought it).

The focus is good, with a separate diopter adjustment for mismatched eyes. Nice bright image with no sign of chromatic aberration except perhaps around the extreme edge.

I have only two reservations.

One is that the focal distance is so great that the boom has to be clamped at the very top of the travel on the main vertical pillar (unlike the picture), if I want to focus on a flat object on the table in front of the scope. Let's hope I never have to work on something taller! Though in that case I suppose I could put a book or something beneath the 'scopes base.

Second is that the lamp is a mains powered 10W incandescent bulb (like from an old bicycle lamp) and hence I need to be tethered to a nearby power socket, or have trailing cables. I would have thought in this day and age it should be possible to have a battery powered white LED lamp. However none are listed on the website. I'm going to see if I can cobble something together myself.

Solid construction, reasonably simple to put together, some nice finishing touches and a clear, sharp image.

I wanted a stereo microscope for fine soldering work at home and this unit, while not as flexible as some, is a lot cheaper. It gives a good image for surface mount component placement at 0.5mm pitch. It has a long working distance which is not ideal and I would have preferred something with a closer working range but for the price and quality it is a great purchase. The base is heavy and if arranged with the base facing forwards as shown in the photographs makes the unit very stable.

The focus adjustment is firm and smooth which makes getting a sharp image easy. The clamp screws for the stand have good size knobs on them which makes then easy to hold. The tip of the screw for the height adjustment has a sprung end which is a great feature as it makes the height adjustment of the stand so much easier because it releases smoothly rather than grabbing then letting go suddenly.

The only slight confusion I had was the wiring of the lamp. There are two rings which slip over the stand and help keep the cable tidy between the base and the lamp. There are several ways of attaching these to the stand. One is shown in the product photo here and a different method is shown in the manual which comes with the microscope. I have tried both, I'm not sure which I prefer.

As mentioned in another review the light is an incandescent bulb and if I could have any improvements #1 would be for a stronger light source, probably LED, with a dimmer control.

This isn't an all singing, all dancing inspection microscope like the one I use occasionally at work but then it isn't £7500 either! For the price I paid I'm happy with what it does.

Ordered this on the Sunday,it was waiting when i got home Tuesday evening..never had anything delivered so quickly.
It was easy to assemble and took me only ten minutes to set up and get working, which considering i've never used a microscope before let alone put one together speaks for itself.
