3.0 out of 5 stars Useful resource, but doesn't quite satisfy., 26 May 2001

This is a supplement for Steve Jackson Games' generic roleplaying system. I don't know the GURPS system, but their genre/world books are often very useful for other games. This one sets out the main elements of a Celtic setting, like heroic feats and the magical nature of the land; gives summaries of the main mythic stories from Ireland and Wales; and gives guidelines for running a Celtic campaign. There are rules for creating Celtic characters in GURPS, with suggested advantages and flaws. Artwork is alright, but nothing to write home about.

I found this a useful contribution to my thinking about a Celtic game, and there's almost no other Celtic game material out there, but I'd suggest not making it your only source. Due to space limitations a lot is left out of the myth summaries. Also, it sometimes takes an angle that's not supported by other sources: for instance, making bards the lowest rank of druid when they're usually quite separate. (I also object to calling the Tuatha De Danaan "sidhe" - it's commonly used in fantasy fiction, but properly refers to their underground dwellings.) Celtic Myth suffers a bit from trying to support the whole range of possibilities from historic to fantastic in a limited space. There is no information about faeries or monsters (Scottish folklore, particularly, is awash with these) or about the Tuatha De Danaan, the Celtic "gods", except in passing in the myth summaries. Fortunately there are lots of other books about Celtic mythology available these days.
