The Coast Guard's Finest! 17 Sep 2014
By J. Michalowski - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
If you like well-researched books about significant historical events and have any interest in the United States Coast Guard then buy this book right now. In the interest of full disclosure I am a retired Coast Guard veteran so perhaps Douglas Munro means more to me that to the average person. Still, long before I joined the Coast Guard I enjoyed history (and still do). The author's in depth research is evident throughout the entire book. By the time you get to the finish you feel that you know the key people and events quite well. The entire Guadalcanal invasion is presented in excellent detail. There are also some additional Coast Guard sections that are certainly worth reading. I've been looking forward to this book and I wasn't let down. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down until I finished it.

Fantastic read 26 Oct 2014
By Glenn R. Bass - Published on Amazon.com

Amazing read. As a former Coastie, I have to say that this book about Douglas Munro is outstanding. The book takes you through the life and death of the only Coast Guardsman to receive the Medal of Honor. This is a must read for anyone and everyone. Once you start reading it, you will find it hard to put down until you are finished. I am so glad that Mr. Williams decided to write a book about Douglas Munro. Many people have no idea what the Coast Guard does or has done and many of them never knew about the heroics of our hero, Signalman First Class Douglas A. Munro. Engaging, well written and well researched. Gary Williams ... 14 Nov 2014
By Karen Etchberger - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Engaging, well written and well researched. Gary Williams has also written Seal of Honor, the story of Lt Michael Murphy, Navy Seal Medal of honor recipient. Doug Munro is not only a hero among the Coasties, he is also revered by the Marines. He should be, he saved 500+ of them at Guadalcanal.

A must read for Coasties & WW II buffs! 4 Nov 2014
By dave ferree - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I would rate the book higher for those interested in Coast Guard history or the World War II battle for Guadalcanal. This is the story of the lone Coast Guard Medal of Honor winner, Doug Munro. As a Coast Guard family, we were particularly interested in the book. That probably won't be the case for everyone.
The book was obviously a labor of love for author Gary Williams. His research was extensive, detailed, and he was able to utilize a number of primary sources and in-person narratives. The book is a quick and easy read and I appreciated it.
On the negative side, despite the research, there are some factual errors in the book. At times, the writing reads like a high school book report with superfluous facts and anecdotes piled on to the point of detracting from the books stated purpose - Munro's story of heroism. I would have appreciated more emphasis on the actual events and details surrounding the battle that took Munro's life and his heroic acts of that day.
One additional note: there are numerous small typographical errors throughout. The book needs a top-notch editing job, both for the typos and the writing. I think the publisher owes that much respect to the hard work of the author and to Doug Munro, a hero of the highest order.

I can't believe they haven't made a movie out of this yet. Very well written, you can tell the author did a great deal of research on this subject. A must read for any war or Coast Guard buff.
