Product Description

GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is global mobile data technology. More important it is a step en route to next-generation wireless, or 3G, for many networks in the US and most networks in Europe and Asia. Questions like "when can we expect European take-up of GPRS?", "what kind of roaming will the standards bodies adopt?", "what functionality will first-generation terminals provide?", or "how will GPRS change the basic business practices of GSM operators?" all need to be answered before implementations proceed. This book helps the wireless industry gets its arms around the issues with contributions from many of the pioneering companies in the mobile data industry. It equips professionals with plain English explanations of technology, markets, billing systems, terminals and management challenges.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of GPRS Demystified, 4 Dec 2002
By Charles Berteau - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: GPRS Demystified (Paperback)
This book provides a good summary of GPRS from many points of view, and generally lives up to its cover billing. It provides a broad overview of GPRS, with short chapters written by industry experts.

For those seeking a detailed technical understanding of GPRS, this book is not for you -- the "technical" chapters are very high level. But for those wanting to get up-to-speed quickly on the "whole GPRS" (from applications to roaming to business issues to...), it's a quick and mostly well-written and well-edited read.

There are a few technical errors (e.g. HSCSD was not introduced in GSM in 1993) and some data inconsistencies across chapters (not surprising given the format) The chapter sequencing is also a bit odd in some cases, making a sequential read-through somewhat disjoint. But the index is complete and most readers will learn something in every chapter.

Overall, the book achieves its intended purpose quite well, and most authors have a slightly humorous style which is as gripping as the topic allows.

5.0 out of 5 stars GPRS Demystified, 11 Sep 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: GPRS Demystified (Paperback)
GPRS Demystified is a very good read. The chapters are short with intros which define the overall content of the section. I found most parts of the book to be insightful with none of it downright boring.

Overall, I rate the book four and a half stars and believe it will appeal to those wishing to better understand the GPRS service concept. It is a soup to nuts overview of GPRS by chapter writers which use various styles to tell their part of the GPRS story. Interesting stuff.

I learned a great deal by reading GPRS Demystified and highly recommend it to those wishing to gain an understanding of this new cellular technology service.

2.0 out of 5 stars A horse designed by a committee, 14 Feb 2006
By E. Chan - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: GPRS Demystified (Paperback)
This book is written by about two dozen people. Everyone writes one chapter. Unfortunatley, each writer spends about half the chapter giving their view of GPRS instead of providing useful information.

You expect this from most books but most single author will do it for about 2 chapters in the beginning and he will have to get down to business. If you add up the useless information in each chapter, it probably takes up about half the book. Truely "A horse designed by a committee"
