5.0 out of 5 stars superb, well illustrated ,read. 15 Oct 2010

Very well written overview of the war in the Sudan. Bulging with fantastic illustrations and colour ! The Author understands the importance of the ground in battle and uses his military experience to give a sense of authenticity to the accounts. Packed with Victorian heroes and a sense of the "boys own" Victorian yarn.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Delight 18 Oct 2012
I must echo the views of my two fellow reviewers. This is a book with useful detail, splendid photographs of the actual sites, good uniform illustrations giving a very immersive read. At the same time there is plenty of human interest and a lack of triumphalism towards the foe. Often "hobby" historians are content to regurgitate previous books: Mike Snook instead takes matters several levels upwards.

A Kid's Review
the text is no nonesense descriptions of the battles ivolved in the sudanese campaigns, the book though is visually very nice there are water colours and prints from the era and also very nice illustrations of the fighting men who took part in this war,if you like well illustrated books or you want to know how the battles flowed or you have an interest in this period then this book is for you.
