Biography

Gnarls Barkley is a musical group collaboration between multi-instrumentalist, DJ and producer Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) from New York, and rapper/vocalist Cee Lo Green (Thomas Callaway), from Atlanta. Their first album, St. Elsewhere, was released in 2006; along with its first single, "Crazy", it was a major commercial success, and both album and single have been noted for their ... The new album from Gnarls Barkley picks up very much in the same vein as St Elsewhere, with an eclectic blend of deep grooves and highly experimental production styles and beats from Dangermouse, and Ceelo's sombre lyrics fused with his unique, bombastic and heartbreakingly soulful delivery. The album has so much heart and reverence for 60's soul, pop and psychadelia, as well as embracing cutting edge experimentation that it's hard not to find something to love about it. Admittedly some of the tracks are more difficult than others, but this is an album that stands up to and grows with repeated listening. Personally, I'm a massive fan of Gnarls Barkley and feel this is a better all round album than their exceptional debut, so if that did it for you, there's really no excuse!

In a lot of ways this album is better than their first album! Despite the success of the first album, I felt this album was actually a better listening. Brilliant choruses and attractive rhythms with the band creating some top melodies and imaginative skills... a great album!

Hadn't been into Gnarls B - saw them on the Abbey Road Sudios Live sessions and figured I had been missing something.
The album sounds totally different - not bad - just totally different, so I should have listened to some sample tracks before buying.
The studio sessions were brilliant - check them out on iPlayer.

A very similar and equally impressive album as their debut St Elsewhere. The beauty from my point of view is the fact that they are unique and sound like no other 'band'. The arrangements are eclectic, the lyrics beguiling and the voice simply outstanding.I highly recommend both their albums.

Like so much Gnarls Barkley music the tracks on this album are beefy, full on sounds with stacks of background filling. Although slotted in the RnB genre, this is a mix up of RnB, drum and base and jazz funk. 'Going on' is the up beat number that promotes this album with a meaty tempo flick and hooking verse that calls for volume. 'Run (I'm a natural Distaster)', 'Would Be Killer' are similar while 'Open Book' is more experimental. 'Surprise' and 'Blind Mary' are more contemporary, other tracks compliment nicely and collectively go to make a 'must have ' for Gnarls Barkley afficionardos. Unlike many of todays albums which sport at best two worthwhile tracks, 'The Odd Couple' is value for money, worth a place in anyones collection and more importantly must be in your car CD player at full volume.

I couldn't wait to listen to this new album - but after the first play I really didn't like it at all and was pining for the excellent St Elsewhere album. In fact I couldn't find a single track which I liked - although of course the incredible layers of production and imagination are still very much present in this new album.
So I left it for a day or so and then realised that it had started to work its way into my subconcious. It's safe to say I'm pretty obsessed with "Going On" and "Run" and can't stop playing them. That's the odd thing sbout the Odd Couple - the more you play it the more you get to know it and to like it.
I'm still getting to know this album a week after buying it.
For me - it's a much more "grown up" album - loads of moody dark Cee Lo lyrics and my God, can that guy sing! A small disappointment for me was the lack of Cee Lo machine gun rapping (in the Transformer mode) and there aren't any quirks like Feng Shui but the sheer inventive Dangermouse sounds and arrangements more than make up for this.

This is an amazing album by two very amazing artists. I would love to buy this album as an mp3 album but I can't seem to find it available on Amazon. I refuse to buy mp3's from iTunes so thats out of the question, I much prefer Amazon. Please make it available...

I am about to buy St. Elsewhere but The Odd Couple has got to be my all time favourite album.

Thanks for the beautiful and dark yet so inspiring music from the soul!
