5.0 out of 5 stars Retro Slushie Maker, 28 July 2010

Arrived today, and already made two rounds of slushies. Makes enough to give four med-large drinks. Worked perfectly. I had read lots of reviews and some poor ones and was a bit nervous I was going to be one of the ones that "just couldn't get it right". However, I needn't have worried.

The instructions are very straightforward and easy to follow. Yes, it is very noisy but I was so pleased with end result that I didn't take a star off. I was initially worried that I was adding 6tbs salt to my drink and was extremely worried about the repercussions on my health. But having read other reviews I realised that the salt (plus water and ice) is in a separate chamber. The ice is there to lower the temp and the salt is there to raise the temperature the slushie liquid needs to be at so it will freeze. I bought blue raspberry slushie concentrate from ebay which was really tasty ("flavour master" for anyone interested £28 for two X 5 litres...1 part conc to 5 parts water...it works out at 14p per slushie but not taking into consideration ice, salt or electricity.) The machine also has a very well designed opening for the slushie liquid to be poured in. You can pour it in quickly with no over flowing or spillages. Also the gap for putting the ice in is a decent size and took the size of ice pieces you get from the supermarket easily.

In summary, if you've always wanted to do slushies at home go for this. If you follow the instructions you wont be disappointed. Remember to get the slushie straws too!

4.0 out of 5 stars It does what it claims to, 8 July 2010

I have had this machine for several weeks now and I have to say I am impressed. It makes slush and it does it quite quickly. Those that can't get their drink to freeze either have a broken unit or didn't follow the instructions.

You need to put 6 TABLESPOONS of salt into the centre, add half a cup of water, switch on and then fill with ice. You then add your drink to the outside chamber. Drinks high in sugar content are recommended. Actual slushie syrup works well, so does fruit juice. Alcoholic drinks will not work as the alcohol lowers the freezing point of the mixture. Fizzy drink also do not work well.

I only have it 4 out of 5 stars because A) it is rather noisy and B) you need a lot of ice for each (full) run of slush. You need atleast 2 of the DIY ice cube bags that the likes of tesco and sainsburys sell that you fill with water.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit tricky at first, 11 July 2011
This review is from: GILES AND POSNER SLUSH MAKER
I bought this for my six year old who loves slushies! We tried three times to make a slushie, following all the instructions, but we couldnt get it to slush, not even after 40 minutes. As a last ditch attempt (before I was about to send it back) I discovered that if you chill the liquid in the fridge for a good few hours before making it, the liquid then does actually turn to slush as promised.
It's good, but it couldn't be used as a spur of the moment thing really due to the fact that you need to ensure you have enough ice in the freezer and also have to make up the liquid and chill it for a good few hours before you want the slushies. I can imagine it being a special occasion type of thing, but certainly not a spontaneous every day type of treat.
