Well, after clearing snow and ice from the car at half five every morning at silly temps I took the plunge and tried these to keep my mitts warm.

And boy do they work.

Looked brand new on arrival, fitted like ,well, mitts and keep your hands appreciably warmer than gloves.

I can eaven drive with them on due to the nice grippy and surprisingly good quality leather palms.

Downsides.....dont try texting whilst wearing them.

apart from that .........perfect

I use mittens for winter hill walking, sometimes in extreme weather conditions. I have struggled to find truly waterproof gloves / mittens even though manufacturers claim their products are waterproof. I find mittens perform better than gloves as they are warmer and it can be difficult to get fingers into gloves when your hands get wet on the hills. These mittens are the best that I have found and they are about a third of the price of other makes. I used them on a day when we had hours of driving rain. Although they did eventually leak (after about 2 or 3 hours of very heavy rain), that performance was far better than others makes that I have tried. I suffer from very cold hands and I have found these mittens to be extremely warm. A very minor down side is that they are a bit heavy (295g for medium size), but they are worth carrying. They are also big for their size. I normally buy large size gloves / mittens, but medium size fit me perfectly.

Bought these mitts for a recent snowboarding trip to the Alps. There was a particularly cold snap and temperatures were down to -30C with wind chill. I also suffer from Raynauds disease (where my circulation is affected by cold.)

These mitts were fantastic! So warm and completely waterproof. I was a bit dubious when they arrived as there was no "gortex" badge or anything - so I ran them under a tap for 2 minutes. Completely dry.

I used them with very thin liner gloves, and didn't feel the cold at all. Fantastic value for money. One word of warning - don't get the metal clasp in your mouth at -30C when pulling them tight with your teeth (ouch!)

These are a godsend.

Everyone else.
As a motorcyclist, there are times of the year where I'm rendered unable to ride to work, namely when it's icy and I refuse to take the risk. At this point I usually get the bus or walk. These gloves are perfect for such occasions. I've not tried them in real cold weather yet but judging by their performance in prolonged 70(ish)mph winds, I can't see them being flustered by a chilly breeze.
These are all the gloves you need. Granted, they're not the most stylish kids on the block, but they're a damn sight more attractive than frostbitten fingers! Like I could care about my dress sense when it's fallen below zero and I've got to walk an hour and a half to work.

Motorcyclists.
I bought them originally for use in conjunction with motorcycle gloves during the winter. For this purpose they're unfit. HOWEVER that is at fault of myself. I didn't take into account how much harder it would be to work the hand controls with two pairs of large gloves on.
I actually didn't get far enough to try, after squeezing one of my hands (already with an armoured glove on) into a medium size version of this product, it was indeed too hard to move. So that idea went out the window. Thus I tried riding with just these gloves on. And it is entirely possible to somewhat (and real emphasis on somewhat) safely pilot a bike, however not so easy due to the thickness and mittenness. I would liken it to riding with boxing gloves on, or what I would imagine that to be like, very haphazard.
So unless it's real cold and late at night, so the roads are empty, and it's not snowing/icy, these will be staying at home or in my bag.

As has been mentioned these mitts are very warm and excellent value. I plan to use these in very cold conditions for both motorcycling and skiing. I've used them a couple of times on my bike so far and they work very well with thin thermal inners.

As has been mentioned you'll have to adjust how you ride, it takes some getting used to braking and using the clutch when using mitts. They turned out a lot warmer than my normal motorcycle gloves - I rode for over an hour in close to zero temperatures. This would have been impossible using my usual gloves which have a limit of about 15 minutes in those sort of temperatures.

I'm sure they would work at even lower temperatures when skiing/mountaineering, given that there's less wind compared to motorcycling. I'm convinced they'd be okay when skiing at -10 degC or colder.

In terms of sizing, I'm almost always an XL. I bought the Large as recommended by others and these have plenty of room for lining gloves. I could probably squeeze thicker gloves under them, but this might restrict movement too much. Although classed as "surplus" the gloves looked brand new and were very decent quality.

A real bargain!
